Developer Meeting Notes: July 27, 2014

<gasp>Will pie menus actually make it into 2.72? ;-)</gasp>

Here are the notes from today's meeting in irc.freenode.net #blendercoders.
1) Upcoming 2.72 release projects

  • Bastien Montagne: the FBX todos for release are in master now. Check the extensive doc on FBX here, including Hamster samples (more examples coming).
  • Tamito Kajiyama: Freestyle for Cycles is under review, Thomas Dinges accepted it from a UI perspective. See patch.
  • Antony Ryakiotakis: Pie menus still have a few minor additions and then we can do final review. Could get in git master this week.
  • Aside of pies and freestyle, "BCon3" is active for all other projects per now.

2) Google Summer of Code

  • Roman Pogribnyi solved the fluid linking issues. Work on getting Mantaflow to work now can finally proceed.
  • Jason Wilkins has a patch that will go to 2.72 already.

3) Other projects

  • OpenSubdiv proceeds, texture support. Tangent space normal mapping and generated texture coordinates still have to be done.
  • Dalai Felinto has a fullscreen patch: Organize Maximize/Fullscreen mess and add a new fullscreen mode with no UI. Review is positive, will make it for 2.72.

I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

Right that is it, he has jus jinxed pie menus lol, We will have to wait until the next release now lol.

But yeah seriously, i am really happy about the love FBX has been receiving lately, all i would like to know is, just say i had a model with corrective shape keys automatically driven by drivers inside of blender so i don't have to animate those separately, if i import that model into blender via the new FBX exporter will say for instance unity import the drivers and it work as it did inside unity or would i have to set it back up via either true editor or via custom code.

If this wouldn't work is this something thwart could be implemented at a l;ayer date or is it due to the limitations of the game engines themselves.

    Thank you in advanced.

  2. I think the cloth seam need simpler approach..... I feel tired connecting so much vertices to make edges that define the seam..... and may be the for cloth could have triangular tesselation, not current quads so the deformation could be better :)

    • Couldn't one create a non-linear curve and then have an iterative pattern along the curve be created if you key the ends first?

  3. Mantaflow sounds interesting. Would love to see some further advancements in fluid with Blender.

Does anyone know what the fluid linking issues were?

  4. I never was a fan of pie menus. They never feel intuitive. But that's me .. I'm old and inflexible to change :)

Everything else looks great, though. FBX love, Mantraflow, OpenSubDiv .. good progressions.

All i want is the option for dyntopo to preserve UV co-ordinates when i want it to for doing high poly sculpting on a model that has already been retopoligized, and which is already nice and low poly.

Does any one know when something like this will be implemented.
