The Belgian Blender User Group contributed this video tutorial on volumetric lighting in Blender 2.71.
My friends from the Belgian Blender User Group (BBUG) and I were really excited about the new volumetric capabilities of Blender 2.71. During one of our monthly training/workshop sessions we jointly experimented with it and the shaders you can use with the volumetrics and got some really nice results.
We also found some things to keep in mind and some workarounds for known problem (e.g. using sun lamps and world volumetrics, or going inside a volumetric material). After the workshop, we decided to pour everything we learned into a video tutorial that explains about the three shaders you can currently use for volumetrics and how to get heterogeneous volumes using textures.

One of the best tutorials I have seen for a long time. Extremely clear purpose, explanation, and demonstrations. No music, clear vocal. I learned a lot in a short time! Particularly liked the demonstration (at 18:20) of how Blender's procedural textures work in 3 dimensions.
BlenderNation caters to an international audience, and English is the main language. You're welcome to publish comments in other languages, as long as they contain an English translation as well.
Dear Wil,
I am indeed a Dutch speaker. More precisely from Belgium (which you probably guessed). I found that community site yesterday, but haven't connected to it yet. I do think that will happen soon enough.
I don't know about Dutch tutorials. Making them in English is benificial for everyone. And making them twice seems to be worth less than the trouble. But if you think it would be better to make them in both languages, share your insights and I might consider.
At everyone else: thank you so much for your kind words.
enjoyed that tut , lots of stuff i did'nt know. well mabye not lots, but enough to mention.. .anyway thanks for puttin it out there. happy blending !
very interesting experiments!! Thanks for sharing this knowledge.
Cool! I always love good tutorials about new Blender features. Thanks for sharing! :)
Greatly explained, thanks a lot !
Great Tutorial! but... how did you achieve the image used for the youtube thumbnail? With the blue layered spheres? I haven't been able to figure it out. It looks like a soft noise texture of some kind, with the volume effects only going part-way in... I could be completely wrong. Anyone have any ideas? It'd be great to use as an energy ball in a sci-fi animation or the like :)
