You would probably use a darker, more rough texture.
Why didn't you use the Displace input of the Material output node?

Interesting result. This is not necessarily a great "Realistic" barrel concept, but it would work well in a triple-A game. Give it a "gunpowder" sign, darken the wood, and you've got a nice barrel of gunpowder for a pirate game. :) This is a great stepping stone towards realistic renders for beginners, so it is worth a watch!
Yuo propably never seen a real barrel, and you dont know anything about how barrel is done and what kind of wood is used and why, so let me google that for you:
