Weekend contest: Toys in the attic

56

After winning last weekend's contest, it's now Colino Grillet's turn to pick a topic.

My idea for the next contest come from an Aerosmith title : "Toys in the attic". What are your old toys doing in this hidden place ?

I Hope you will like answer this question ;)

Post your work below (attach an image and a screenshot if you like), and vote for your winner. The winner will get a post on monday, and will get to pick next weekend’s contest theme. Have fun!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

      • hay man, try darkening the whole scene and making actual floor boards. Also try making a sort of spot light coming from above the center of the scene. This what i would do. Hope it helps. G Job so far

Nice job modeling! A couple bits of advice...
        1) Camera- try moving it up closer to the toys. Also, try putting at an angle looking up/down at the toys to add an interesting viewpoint.
        2) Try finding some textures for the cardboard boxes to add some realism.
        3) Experiment with the composition nodes. A lot of cool effects can be achieved using them. Just look up some tutorials on realism in blender.
Keep up the good work! :)

Much better! Now we can see the source of light. Your addition of a floor texture makes a huge improvement, adding to the realism.
Also, there now seems to be a story behind it- the single source of light creates a mystery. Why is the person up there with a flashlight? Did one of the toys move (if you know Doctor Who, is one of them a Weeping Angel-style monster)?
Keep up the good work! :)

looks like I submitted wrong...sorry about that Nathan. Hope to get some feedback. Like why all the noise? Thanks

      • I'm assuming this is cycles? I don't use it too often, but perhaps more samples would help with the noise, and a larger resolution would be a nice improvement

Aside from the technical details of how you render, I would suggest maybe working on the lighting. The success of the image is dependent upon the lighting. When I think of attics I usually picture soft, orange light coming in from a window or such.

Also, maybe mapping an image to the floorboards would help add to the realism (jBlenderUser3D's submission to this contest, "Toy Battle", is a fine example of this)

        Otherwise, great work!

  1. "Stages"
It was a lot of fun making this image, I challenged my self to not use any image textures which made me alter my design more that once. I thought this image is important for a lot of people because everyone is growing up.

Here's my entry, "Old School Blender." Yes, that is a screenshot of Blender 1.6! :)
Everything except for the screenshot texture of Blender 1.6 and the keyboard texture was done by me.
    Comments and critiques appreciated! Enjoy!

I don't know... I just googled "Old keyboard top" and cropped the picture a bit.
Anyways, here's the keyboard texture if that helps identify it, along with a screenshot of my setup!

    • Really great entry, I love the wood texturing (especially on the horse). If I have one suggestion, its that the car lacks definition. Perhaps add some ambient occlusion?

    • AspiringAnimator on

Dude, this is awesome! The level of realism is great!
As for the car lacking definition, I used to have one just like it,
and it had that amount of definition (being a kid's toy.)
The only thing I would change is outside the window- the amount of light outside
doesn't seem to match the color/amount of the light coming through the skylight (I think it's a skylight?).
      Overall, very nice work! :)

  3. Here is a quick picture i made in reference to the "Toys in the attic" by aerosmith. I song i know is very popular.

  4. So I don't usually work in 3D with blender, but I thought I should give it a try... :)

Any critiques on modeling, composition, lighting, etc. would be much appreciated

  5. Rachel-Esther Bat-Avraham on

Here is my very feeble attempt. I am still fairly new to Blender and all things 3D but I am working on it!

  6. Weston Martin on

Here is mine. I call it "Forever Alone". I used the Compositor for some effects and rendered with Cycles. The Out of Focus tree was from the starter pack from Andrew Price and the base for the cloth simulation. Otherwise everything was done by myself and I am very proud.

  7. My entry for the contest. I am not entirely confident about the result, but I did not have more time for it. I call it "Hunt for the first duck".

  8. Here is another picture that I attribute to Aerosmith's "Toys in the attic". Hope you enjoy. Up for advice:

  9. So I really wanted to get the light doing something a lot better than this, but instead of working on Blender this weekend I adopted two kittens, so that kind of took precedence this week...
