I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. This could be an excellent add-on but there's a couple of fundamental things missing:

    1) When I linked an object, I couldn't move it in my scene. You can only move a linked item if it was a group. Seems a bit weird?

    2) If I later re-organise or move my linked file, it doesn't appear when I open my 'scene' file - and Blender doesn't ask me where to find it either. Is there any way to open an old scene file (that contains lots of linked objects), and redirect all the links to the new / moved library folder? Adobe Illustrator lets you do this: when you open your 'scene' .ai file and it can't find linked graphics, it asks you where to find them. Tell it where one file is and it automatically tries that folder for all the other linked files.

    • What martin_lindelof said.

      Plus, if you goto: File > External Data
      There you can Report missing files, to see which files are missing. (It is shown in the console, you need to pull down the menu in the upper part of Blender)
      You can also using, Find missing files, to re:link files ;)

      • I just tried External Data > Find Missing Files, but it simply doesn't work. I went to the correct folder (I could see the two missing blend files) and clicked the Find Missing Files button, but the objects didn't appear. Perhaps it's broken.

      In the library file;

      - create an empty
      - assign the objects you want to import
      - Set the empty to duplicate that group

      In the scene file, import the group. This will import that empty, and you can move it around in the scene. I just wish it worked with armatures :/

    1) Ctrl+Alt+P (to make to local proxy, keeping the linkage between the asset.blend file and your main working file)

    • Too bad you cannot by choice also do the same with materials such as locally overwriting material changes or linking back to the master link.
