Sculpting Tutorial: Planes of the Face

feature2

Doris Fiebig presents her first tutorial on the new Sculpt Cookie website, in which she explains the basic shapes of faces. Learning these will make you a better face modeler.

Doris writes:

Understanding Facial Structure as a Sculptor

The human face is such an important thing in our culture. It’s how we recognize a friend, interpret an emotion, define a character, etc. And its been a common focus of artists throughout art history, including the modern age. Just go browse a popular CG forum gallery and count how many portraits are on the first page. Since the face is such a popular topic, it’s important for sculptors to know how to construct a human face correctly.

This course teaches a concept for simplifying facial shapes into a more easily digestible form. The concept is known as “Planes of the Face” and if you can grasp the technique, you will be much better prepared to sculpt a likeness of someone and to sculpt a believable face from scratch!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.
