OCTANERENDER

OctaneRender Standalone Edition 1.50 is now available. This release adds support for Alembic files, adds a node system, object visibility properties and more.

From the announcement:

We're very proud to announce the availability of a stable version of OctaneRender™ SE 1.50.

OctaneRender™ SE 1.50 introduces support to the Alembic file format for animation import. This version provides scripting capabilities and a time slider to seamlessly load animated geometry and camera data. It eases grouping nodes, hides complex node setups, presents a primary visibility feature that defines an object's visibility to the camera, offers more shadow casting options and offers new texture transforms with border rendering.

Many new features since 1.2, mainly Alembic support and Object Visibility Properties.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. For all students: there is going to be a free Blender plugin. I wrote several Mails to the Octane Team: most of the american students can order the free copy by now, with their university-mail adress as confirmation, and (hopefully) in the near future universities outside the US will be integrated in the system.
Here is an excerpt from the Conversation... I hope it's OK for them to put it here:

    Answer:
(...) I tried to purchase an educational licensed version of your
Blender-Plugin, I'd really like to experiment with this great
render-engine! But the shop doesn't recognize my email address as a
    student address.

    I'm currently studying (...) .

In the attachment you'll find a pdf of my university. Is it possible to get a license this way? (...)

    Response:
(...) We have just made the student license available for blender plugin as well. We are currently reviewing our process of
email filtering for student licenses because many
universities/educational institutions outside the US do not use .edu,
.ac, .edu.[country code] or ac.[country code] domains.

Unfortunately, we do not have the manpower to process applications manually.

Please be patient and we will inform you when a decision is made on how we are going to proceed. (...)
    //End of quote

Thats it, hope this helps for some of you (who can't wait to get hands on this powerful tool.... and can't afford it as a student).
