'Super City' is a social network game whose game assets were all developed using Open Source software. Paul Geraskin reports.

Paul writes:

Hello Friends!

Russian company Playkot has been released social game "Super City" on FaceBook. We are really happy with this event! 2 years of development with Krita, Blender and Gimp. It's really nice to use such tools. We used blender with internal rendere, then Cycles appeared and we moved to it. For Texturing we used Gimp firstly but since December 2012 we fully moved to Krita as it's more powerful tool for painting textures. We hope to see more Krita + Blender integration with sharing layers and easy painting.

Super City already was tested in Russian social networks like www.vk.com and www.odnoklassniki.ru and even in Korea and Japan. :)

This game was played 4 millions of users in Russia, Japan and Korea. And all these people saw Krita and Blender art! :)

  1. Glad to see other indie developers using Krita. I use Krita for texturing, as well. It's a versatile tool and has some intelligent features. I really like using its guides, for instance.

If I had just one wish, it'd be to see Krita support RAW file types, so that I could edit heightmaps in Krita with 2D style (I have 3D editors, but sometimes you just need 2D), since Unity and CryENGINE 3 SDK are very popular and center around RAW (and .r16) heightmaps.

The only other similar option available for such is Photoshop, as there are no other free options around (not even GIMP), and I think this feature would immediately put Krita in everyone's toolset. Perhaps we'll see it someday. Especially since I think game developers are becoming THE driving force behind a lot of creation suite software nowadays, even more so that film.

Otherwise, Krita's developing to be a solid tool for texturing and concept art, and I love seeing its adoption grow. I've seen that Krita's been Greenlit on Steam and it seems to be getting a lot of good attention lately in general. That's great for Krita! May it prosper!

And yeah, I as well hope for better Blender/Krita integration, maybe Blender supporting Krita files someday, though Blender itself will need an improve layers system to see the full potential of such integration.

My mom cannnot play the game because her Malwarebytes says that the website is malicious. This has come about just in the last few days. She cannot contact anyone either because it does not even let her have that much of the game site on FB. Other people with Malwarebytes are having the same problem. Can someone fix this please? Thanks

    • mines just come up the same too , according to the MB security blog its picked up a background advertiser and its that theyve blocked ..hence the reason u can take a risk and manually override the bocking

  3. Hey, nice work! If anyone is surprised that this was done with open source software it is because they underestimated its power. What else is needed to produce this quality of work is artists who have invested the time and effort to learn their tools well, and this holds true no matter what the tools. The lesson is: stick with it. The FOSS tools are in all of our hands - now it's up to us.
