Andreas Esau is quietly working on a beautiful game in the Blender Game Engine. He's sharing his progress through a series of YouTube videos.

Andreas writes:

Charlie's Big Adventure is a game that is a sideproject(besides work and family) for a few years already. I try to work on it in my spare time. It is not always possible to spend very much time on it, and I do not always have the motivation to doso. But I would love to actually finish this game. Please don't expect this game to soon! Lots of tasks where really challenging for me and I needed a few iterations to get to the point where I am now! But I am confident now and I think I can finish this.

I try to create some fun gameplay. Hopefully I can achieve this and make it work that people will have some hours of fun in playing this game!

The basic story is about Charlie who is trying to find his little bird friends. They dissapeared on a mysterious way. Through the hat Charlie gets to a secret world where hopes to find some of his friends. To rescue them all he has a few adventures and challenges to master! In the end he can maybe figure out the true story why the birds suddenly dissapeared.

For older videos people can take a look at my youtube channel: The look changed quite a bit in the last iterations...

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Damn, this game looks very nice and gameplay seems pretty smooth. I would love to try it out. Maybe story isn't too detailed or clever, but in a platformer game like this it wouldn't be hard to improve or change the story, right? :D Anyways... I really really love that this game have so nice atmosphere - it's dark (in a good way), positive and so dreamy. The music, as in first video of this list, is so nice. It's a good job. I hope that this guy will succeed to finish this game. :)

  2. Kirill Trideshny on

    Very nice! :))))))
The atmosphere reminds me some other good game I've played about 5-6 years ago. But there are mushrooms and some very psychedelic fireflies and other such things :)

  3. This is amazing. In spring of the next year I will start my first game project with another game engine, but the main source of 3D elements will bei Blender. Its very impressive to see a good looking blender game engine game.
    Love it <3

  4. Well, this is why we need more love for bge and.. we have to figure out the way around the blender license.. maybe by creating pipes to different game engines. I think, that would be great for blender to get more unity like, and I think that no one in blender institute really will have a problem with people making money with blender. But I understand how difficult it is to deal with actually good licesnses for opensource software.

    • Is there any problem with the Blender license? People CAN make money with Blender, there isn't any problems with that as far as I know.

  5. It looks wonderful. Has a nice calm and relaxing feel to it. It also shows us how something minimalist and simple in design can become something great.
