I'm giving the Disqus commenting system another try this week. I have a love/hate relationship with the default WordPress commenting system, and am curious if Disqus is going to make conversations and moderation any easier. The biggest attractors for me are ease of management, and the opportunity for everyone to post images in their comments (like for a weekend contest ;-). I've used Disqus in the past, but returned to WordPress when I ran in to some issues - hopefully these are fixed now. What do you think? Do you like this system, or do you prefer traditional WordPress commenting?
Update: I've seen an overwhelmingly positive response to this week's test. Yes, there are some issues with Disqus but then again this is true for most solutions. I've seen the conversation rate go up which is the most important indicator for me that it's a better tool for supporting discussions. I'll keep Disqus on the site!
189 Comments
I refreshed the page after writing a comment and was like, "Whoa, did the commenting system just change?"
Yeah, I think many of us have a love/hate relationship with Disqus. As someone who puts great effort into spelling, I love that it allows me to make corrections, but as someone who values parsing, I hate how it jacks up my careful parsing at times.
But hey, I personally think it's worth a shot again. Let's see how it goes this time.
The commenting is a good point. I've tried that a number of times with the WordPress commenting system, but editing plugins always seemed to clash with the caching systems I use. This would cause users to be able to edit each other's comments etc - nasty stuff!
I'm not sure what you're saying about parsing though, care to explain that some more?
Sure. I comment quite frequently with Disqus and sometimes, if I'm using structured paragraphs, after hitting the Post button, sometimes it'll turn my careful effort at parsing like this:
Into something like this:
"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do
eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad
minim
veniam, quis nostrud exercitation
ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip
ex ea commodo consequat. Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in
voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. Excepteur
sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt
mollit anim id est laborum."
I don't know why this happens at times. Doesn't happen every time, just at random moments, though I do notice this does occur at times when I'm copying and pasting into the comment section.
I can just go back and backspace to correct them, but sometimes, it's just a big headache. But hey, at least it's correctable.
Odd. Well, let's see how it goes here. So far, at least your comment seems to be correctly formatted :)
Eeyup. So far, so good.
Testing.. I want to see if it lets you edit your comments.
Hooray, it does :D
I like the up/down votes feature as well, that might have made finding good posts easer in the UI wars :P
Nice, it updates real time :)
Excellent, it also lets you collapse those big reply trains to save space, and delete your posts.
So far, I like it.
Wuzzah! :)
Who is this little sand eater?
Is this your son Bart?
Very cool photo!
That's 'success kid' an internet meme ;-)
test
hihihi
Let me test by posting a link to my Blender patch submission: https://projects.blender.org/tracker/?func=detail&atid=127&aid=37220&group_id=9
What, still frames only? :)
Hmm? Oh! You tried to post an animated gif?
No, I didn’t. I’m not sure I like them—only 256 colours, after all.
Let's see if YouTube works:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRsGyueVLvQ
Edit: hmm, it shows a thumbnail but doesn't play inline..
Better than just a link, I suppose..
Here's an animated gif:
Or not. :(
I guess not everything can work.. Oh well. I still like this better than the old system (so far)
Hmm that doesn't seem to work for me (iPhone). Still, not too many Blender artists may want to convert their carefully created work to a gif, I suppose ;-)
It doesn't work for me either, so I guess it isn't supported ;)
It converted it to a jpeg when I uploaded it.
It would be nice if more things supported .mng files (animated png) or at least .apng or somekind of lossless animation format that's not a full-blown video format.
I'm guessing those formats are not main-stream enough for them to become supported yet..
You realize why “full-blown” video formats exist? Because your idea of a “lossless” animation format would be ridiculously large by comparison.
HTML 5 video is the answer.
Yeah, if you want to have at least three different versions of the same file on the server ;)
So you’re suggesting having a fourth.
The opposite, that "HTML 5 video is not (specifically) the answer" ;o)
Full-blown video formats do exist for a reason, but I think that lossless (or even lossy, just as longs as they have more than 256 colors :) ) gif type things would still have a use for short loops and such.
Yeah, embedding lossless animations in comments would definitely not make for a good user experience :)
Works fine for me.
works for me! shows a static image on top with the animated gif underneath
(I'm on firefox)
Oh hey, I see two images now, too. Maybe my phone just showed one..
I see two too, and before there was only one for me as well. How strange..
Me too, but it wasn't like that before, and I didn't change any thing. weird..
Bottom one is animates, top one is not.
OK, here’s an animated GIF at 25fps.
Do vimeo videos play inline?
https://vimeo.com/59785024
Sintel (2009) - Full Film from Colin Levy on Vimeo.
No.
Still. I like it.
Voting comments up and down is great.
Editing comments is great.
How do you guys feel about having to register with Disqus or using your social media login?
Because disqus allows you to disconnect facebook, twitter, google+ etc. from comments made on specialist websites (like this excellent one!) It works out just fine for me.
At the same time I feel it makes people a little more accountable for their comments cutting down on trolling and repeat posts.
Yeah, let's see how the trolling goes :)
I already use Disqus for various other sites. So no problem here.
Yeah same for me. It's actually quite nice to be logged in everywhere. Although that does leave questions about user tracking etc..
I like the idea of signing in with a s.m. login. Getting tired of keeping track of all these accounts.
Good point, thanks!
I don't mind registering (heh, obviously) but I tend to segregate the user id I use with different things I'm interested in. Old habits die hard I guess, as I belong to the era of the internet where part of the of the attraction was the anonymity so that you were judged on what you wrote rather then who you were in real life (in hindsight, that seems such a gloriously naive way to view the effect on anonymity on online communication!).
My main complaint with Disqus is that there's no easy way to switch between different accounts on the site using theservice; you need to go to Disqus's home page to logout and log back in.
There's a 'gears' icon below the comment box with a logout option.
Not that I can see? Firefox 25.0 on Win 7 64bit
Sorry, the one at the very top:
Canna believe I missed that one... Thanks for the heads up!
With the old system, I could do italic markup, but not bold. What will this allow? Can I escape <html> tags?
OK, how about strikethru and underline ...
Having fun? :-)
You didn’t turn off HTML did you?
No way :)
It would be nice if the comment editor allowed for some simple formatting though. Having to learn HTML feels a bit strange.
Sorry, I got misled above when I tried <FONT>...
HTML strange, you say? I was using it before I came across wiki-style and other such markups...
For other people then :)
Does this meanI can comment
insidetables?
Getting ambitious:
Above was a <blockquote>.
Nice!
Can I embed code?
#!/usr/bin/python3
import sys
charset = ' ,?Wacdehiopstuwxy'
modulo = 19
s = 10288682196705208570477857443976652744480009527918800841867963713260948603776507994029777475513
num = iter(range(2, 9999))
while s != 1 :
n = next(num)
if s % n == 0 :
sys.stdout.write("%s" % charset[(n - 1) % modulo])
s //= n
#end if
#end while
sys.stdout.write("n")
Try again, with instead of space:
#!/usr/bin/python3
import sys
charset = ' ,?Wacdehiopstuwxy'
modulo = 19
s = 10288682196705208570477857443976652744480009527918800841867963713260948603776507994029777475513
num = iter(range(2, 9999))
while s != 1 :
n = next(num)
if s % n == 0 :
sys.stdout.write("%s" % charset[(n - 1) % modulo])
s //= n
#end if
#end while
sys.stdout.write("n")
Did that work?
I think you could do :
<code>
#do code here ;)
</code>
well <code> works :)
You know what? I loove systems that properly escape HTML specials, instead of throwing them away. :)
Interesting ... it kept the <span> tag, but stripped the “style=” attribute.
You will certainly get more voices!! Signup for blendernation or any individual websites seems difficult (hindrance) nowadays. The best thing is you get a centralized notifications from disqus.
Glad its back!!!
Hey, glad to hear it!
yes, images preferable.
But it is on another server, that means, your stuff may not opened some day.
Or another situation, you may be banned for reason of government safety or something.
Anyway, it makes wider users circles.
Fortunately, the comments will also be stored on my own server, so I can stop using Disqus at any time and nothing will be lost! It's a pretty decent solution really.
Oh, and re: more voices, let's wait and see about that :) It's actually my biggest concern. If it reduced the amount of conversation within the community then it's no good.
how you did it?
Did what?
Edit: if you meant keeping the comments on my server as well: the Disqus plugin for WordPress takes care of that automatically.
I don't think you can store comments on BlenderNation on your own server. At least I have a copy of everything, and I don't live in the US :)
I've been wondering for a long time what's with the hold up on this site using disqus, lol.
What do you see as the pros and cons? Do you prefer Disqus over wordpress commenting?
Personally, I prefer Disqus, since It's one less website that I need to register for.
Cool, glad to hear it!
Every website should use this! Was really disappointed when you reverted back to WP commenting system crap so that I didn't visited the website for months, anyway, now I'm back since it's nice to be able to comment and follow discussions :D
It had issues with troll control. I hope it's better this time..
I'm having a problem with Caps, both with Disqus and now the 'new' YouTube. A - when typed is also highlighted and if I don't stop and space once with an arrow vs space bar, it deletes everything. C - cursor disappears and moves to the bottom of the comments. B fine, D fine, E F G H I J K L M N, fine - O - Like A Only O highlights the entire comment section I am typing (A only goes back to the start of the sentence) and if I do not arrow once - the whole post is gone. P- highlights just below the discus box and the icon just below here to the left side of where it reads post as your name. Q - highlights itself, R S - just like P, T U V - fine, W - just like C, X - same as Q, Z - fine. Not new this problem, and I usually just write them elsewhere, copy/paste and done. Now that YouTube is doing the same thing, I'm bongled in the brain.
Should have done the basic check. Using iMac - (latest version) - with Chrome as my browser. Using Safari, all works just perfectly, of course. Chrome/Mac issue apparently. How nice.
Hmmm, I just tested this on Chrome/OSX and I couldn't reproduce that. You wouldn't happen to have some add-on installed that does crazy keyboard things, like VI emulation? :)
I am actually replying on Windows 8, via Chrome and I am having the exact same issue. It must be an extension - (don't have many), so will spend some disabling time and see where that leads. Not sure if VI emulation is present, where do I find that little answer? Thanks!
VI was just a joke really. On OSX you can access the extensions list through the Window>Extensions menu.
Well, I found the extension causing the problem! ChromeVis (by Google) 2.4.4
I'd never noticed 'VI' in the extension list - not that I look all that often - and hey, Vis ... is close enough as it turns out!
Hah, what an amazing coincidence :) Glad to hear you've figured it out.
Thanks Bart, and personally, I've found Disqus (overall, and definitely again!), my preference over WordPress. More and more sites seem to be adding Disqus it seems.
Yeah I must say it feels a lot smoother than WordPress commenting. I'm also starting to enjoy some of the Disqus network features such as following people and seeing what they're commenting on other sites.
Your "This Week - Testing", post is why I showed up here, popped up in a Google search looking for some 'fix' ideas. Cool stuff, loads of talent, great site Bart. Enjoyed the visit.
Glad I could help!
I just hate this down/up vote thing, we are not going to have competitions here... at least it shouldn't have that down vote button... we don't see much harsh/spam here so the only thing that the down vote button does is that it makes some people disappointed from their comments...so they will never leave a comment again...
Let me down vote that... Just kidding ;-) You're right, a down vote could lead to a more negative sentiment in some discussions. However, so far I haven't seen any abuse of it yet, and people are primarily using up voting to 'like' comments.
Down voting is available only to registered members though, maybe that helps a little.
Sorry, I just had to upvote that ;)
I think it can be useful for putting useful/good comments nearer the top, so people don't have to scroll through and read everything
Yeah I kind of like the sorting by 'best' comments to see where the action is. On big discussions, you might miss some good replies that way though..
I personally much prefer Disqus to WordPress, simply because it allows me to link it to my Google+ account (I hated having to log in to WP just to post a comment, it's much easier with Disqus ;). Also editing and upvoting comments, posting images, and HTML formatting.
My two cents.
Glad to hear it, thanks!
It seems I'm getting mostly positive replies here. Maybe the Disqus haters don't want to log in and tell me so?
I like disqus than wordpress comments :D
Thanks!
Try SolidOpinion comments
I see you're spamming that all over the internet (thanks, Disqus! ;-). That, and the fact that Google doesn't return any results doesn't make it look like a serious option.
Is there way to get a non-threaded view with new comments at the top or to high-light new comment since your last visit to a page?
I think the view is always threaded (but then again so was the WordPress commenting system)
I love only having to sign into one account to comment on multiple sites that use Disqus. Having to register just to comment is a hassle.
Disqus doesn't appear to work well with Opera Mini. I think I read somewhere that Opera Mini disables Javascript which Disqus relies on. (Then again, I'm not sure how well WordPress worked either - I never tried it).
Bottom line is you have to go with what works for you. I've seen Disqus in action, but have never really used it until now. It seems alright to me. I've been considering using a wordpress plugin to allow readers to leave comments via Facebook, since practically everyone has a FB account. I'm still unsure of the potential headaches. I'll look into Disqus in the meantime.
I'm grooving on Disqus.

Really, I think many of us have a love/hate connection with Disqus. As someone who places excellent attempt into punctuation, I really like that it allows me to create improvements, but as someone who principles parsing, I dislike how it ports up my cautious parsing at periods.
