Video: Yellow Ribbon

9

A lovely video by Fab Design.

Fab Design writes:

Hello everyone!

We just recently finished a low poly commercial for a Korean company called MagnaLAB to promote their flagship app YellowRibbon.

The app allows the users to send a message to a person, that can only open the message when he/she gets to the specific location the sender wants to.

On this concept, we tried to come up with several ideas, and we eventually decided to go with the one you can see in the video, which tries to explain the story behind the tradition of the yellow ribbon, while showing what the app is all about with a sweet story.

The entire animation was created with Blender, and the render engine used was Cycles, which as proven to be a very good ally for this kind of production! A little bit of post-pro was added with After Effects.

  1. Thanks!

@Blender Head: That was the only thing in the animation we had to render in Blender Internal, since cycles doesn't support volumetric lighting. The dust was later added with After Effects.

  2. I absolutely love this art style! You guys did a great job! Can you tell us how many people and your production schedule? I'm not asking for trade secrets, but I would love to see your pipeline on this. Thanks for sharing.

    • Thanks Talmore, much appreciated!

We are a two- men studio, with 1 person (Annarita Milella) which is responsible for the final touches of post-pro and most of the 2D work, in this case the storyboards and the backgrounds and matte paintings, while I (Francesco D'Ambrosio) am responsible for all the 3D work and part of the post-pro (mostly compositing and the first stage of color grading). We also usually collaborate with Stefano Milella for the soundtracks.

The project was completed in about a month, plus about 10 days of concepting and storyboarding. The first week was spent on the modeling, rigging and shading all the assets, while other two weeks were required for the animation and the lighting. The last week was devoted on the final touches of post production and color grading.

I hope that explanation was good enough, if you want to know more, feel free to ask away! :D

      • Francesco,
Thanks! That is exactly the information I was looking for. I am still very impressed with the design, timing, motion, and music of this spot. You guys did a great job creating a very romantic moment.

Thanks again for sharing your work and process with us.
