Blender_logoBullet rigid body, preview renders, matcaps, 2.66 goodness.

Ton Roosendaal writes:

Hi all,

Here's notes from today's session in irc.freenode.net #blendercoders

1) Blender 2.66 release status

  • Sergej Reich finished his Bullet rigid project just in time before BCon3! Good end-user docs for Rigid Body are coming, but we can get help! Contact Sergej. We should also publish the roadmap (features on the todo) for it.
  • Preview renders in Property Editor for Cycles is coming soon. Sergey Sharybin and Brecht van Lommel will check on some code issues for it, Thomas Dinges and Brecht will work on a Blender file/scene with preview render setups.
  • Matcaps also made it in svn last week. Ton Roosendaal collects submissions for an extended set to include in default. Will involve the submitters for selecting a good set, and/or post it in public for a review.
  • We might have issues with running current svn in Windows 32 bits. Needs to be investigated.
  • Note: this is the last week of BCon3. Next sunday we move to BCon4 - make official testbuilds (Release Candidate).

2) Other projects

  • Freestyle and PyNodes are still 2.67 targets.
  • Ton will free up time to port over pie-menus to Blender for 2.67, using the Python add-on as being tested now.
  • We also really need to re-establish and confirm the module owner list in wiki. Thomas will do an initial cleanup, and after review by Ton it'll be posted here for discussion!

Thanks,

-Ton-

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Yes I too have been having issues with SVN on Windows XP 32bit. I get random faces incorrectly rendered in Cycles, with a "banding" effect, so that only every other line is rendered, the rest is transparent. This happens with completely random faces, when I delete those, some other faces get the problem, it basically makes Cycles unuseable. (earlier releases work correctly.)

  2. I'm really into "pie menus" and everything that can improve Blender's UI ! Also I'm very interested in the forthcoming Bullet integration ! Nice work guys !

  3. Bullet in the next release and if everything goes according to plan Freestyle in the release after that. Can't tell you how excited I am for that.

I thought Freestyle had been all but abandoned, banished to the depths of the experimental builds. We're only two releases away from not having to switch between two or three different versions of Blender to work on a project.
