Blender Guru has announced a new competition.

Andrew Price writes:

There's been some great movies released recently. So I thought it would be fun to see what the blender community could come up with in terms of fan art.

The theme is simple: Create any scene or character from any movie, using blender. And feel free to inject your own flavour to it!

The competition will run for the next 5 weeks and the winner will be awarded any DVD or Bluray of their choice, any item from the blender eShop and $500 to be donated to a charity of their choice!

May the best artist win! :)

    • How can this possibly be construed as falling under fair use? Fan art is not typically prosecuted but still generally considered copyright infringement.

      • Most of the examples in the "inspiration" column that Andrew posted could be considered parody, which automatically puts it under the umbrella of fair use, whether or not a profit is made.

        • Right, of course, but parodies legally need to provide some comment on the original work. "Injecting your own flavor" is not enough, and profit made has nothing to do with it; in fact, profit never has anything to do with it, at least legally. The reason fan art typically isn't a problem is because the owners of the original rights allow for it. This isn't always the case, and when it's not, there's not much you can do about it.

WORLD goes around ! I remember when I first made HULK long ago, a bunch at Blender Artists started to claim MARVEL Copyright ! Even one clown filed a YouTube Claim pretending to be Marvel ! What in big trouble this guy got in !
Now right here at Blender Artists there is a challenge calling for: COPY A CHARACTER FROM ANY MOVIE AND PUT YOUR OWN FLAVOR ! ha ha ha...Finally few years later some have understood the whole thing ! That makes me REALLY Happy !
