Inspired by the “Greyhound” music video by the awesome Swedish House Mafia, this project took me around 30 hrs. to complete(I know I’m slow). Blender Internal rendered it in 4 mins.
My main focus was creating visual appeal while keeping the production time to minimum. Modeling was fun. I started by modeling an actual greyhound, and then I added all the weird gadgets to turn into a robot hybrid. This way I could preserve most of the natural curves. One of the hardest thing was of course posing them since they weren’t rigged. Especially “Goldy”, that’s what I call the one in front, was very frustrating to get him to stretch like that. Lighting is very basic just a sun lamp, some blue tinted environmental lighting and some AO. Texturing incorporates both procedural and image-based textures. I hardly did any composting except some DOF and chromatic aberration, what I usually avoid but which I found necessary for the lens effect. I can’t take credit for the lens/telescope outline/frame around the edges. It is from the actual video which I cleaned up in GIMP.
But everything else I did myself.

This is a nice piece and I am actually quite impressed that you made it in only 30 hours. That seems like a fairly fast turnaround for a good quality image.
To be honest I actually thought it was a snapshot from the video at first, expecting to see some derived model later on the page.
So, very nicely done! And thanks for sharing the model too!
It took me around 30 hrs ( yes I know I am slow ) ha ha ha ! Yes Right ! Nice composition but I can't believe all modeling, textures, rigging, nodes took 30 hrs ! especially robot parts modeling ....nah ! SORRY
man, you are rude all over the "internetz" aren't you? http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=154&t=880504 Would it really kill you to reframe the comment in a more constructive fashion? (such as "a more experienced artist should be able to to do that work in x hours....)
being honest has nothing to do with rudeness. You probably should go for charity work and tell people how good they are even though you may know it isn't the truth.
30 hrs is slow? Would have taken me 4 months.
To everyone saying 30 hours is incredibly fast, the author knows that it's fast. It's what's known as fishing for compliments, like when a beautiful person says that they're ugly, or when a smart person says they're stupid. They say it because the know people will say they are not, which makes them feel good.
I don't think this is true. 30 hours is a reasonable time, not really slow but also not mind-blowingly fast; frankly I'm surprised so many people are insisting that it's really fast. The end result is very nice, but the only aspect that I see as really time-consuming are the models themselves, and since they're not rigged or anything I'd say they should take a few hours but not necessarily more than a day, so with the compositing, lighting etc. I think 30 hours is about what I'd expect and there are certainly people who could do something of comparable complexity (as opposed to artistic quality etc.) much more quickly.
I think most people don't realize that 30hrs is a long time. At 3 hours a day, five days a week, that is two weeks. That seems like a reasonable time. Not fast, but not slow either. Many people on this forum are intermediates, so they take a long time.
About fishing- yes it annoys me, but I realize that I sometimes unintentionally do it to. (mostly age wise)
Woah...take it easy there. People ALWAYS ask how long it takes to do something so they can gauge themselves against that kind of short. Render time and man-hours put into a piece is very very common question. Lets not be sour
*against that kind of work.
I have to admit it was faster than my last project which took 5 months. But I wasn't "fishing for compliments", if you ever read 3D world magazine you will be amazed by what people make in 3 hours.
Beautiful!
Was that commercial done using Blender? or you recreate it? Amazing model btw
Nevermind, I read the description xD
Really nice! I just wish there wouldn't be the frame (lens) blocking the view, but except that it's awesome!
Isn't this a scene from a commercial?
It's really, really nicely composed - the view through the eyepiece is such an interesting element that forces a more believable reality. I never would have thought of that happening! The modeling is fantastically imaginative and I hope this work gets printed somewhere. My question is, are any of the models rigged at all? I see the shoulder shift in the stretching dog and the spine/torso slipping comfortably out of the colored parts....
