The Mixamo Space Battle Contest was won by a Blender user: Tommy Wong. There's an interview with him on the Mixamo website.
Oliver Barraza writes:
Tommy Wong is the first place winner of the Mixamo Space Battle contest. We were simply amazed at the overall presentation, creation and look of the character. His skills in Blender are amazing so we decided to take some time and ask him a few questions and let people in on his secrets.
Mixamo: Can you tell us about yourself?
Tommy Wong: Hi there, my name is Tommy Wong, or Yung as I’m known in a few forums. I live in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where the weather is either raining, hot and humid or VERY HOT. I’ve been dabbling in 3D for 5 years or so now, and I focus mainly on character art, organic or hard-surface. Before going full time freelance, I’ve previously taught 3D modeling classes and I’ve also worked in numerous local 3D animation houses as a 3D generalist.
I am also an avid gamer and toy collector, and if you want my money, just throw in cool robots and I’ll open up my bank account for you! I am currently studying as much as I can about game design and game development, and I hope to start developing my own mech games soon.

Congrats to the winner! It's refreshing to see a contest model that is highly detailed but yet simple and to the point.
Woot, its up! Thanks for the kind words! Glad you like it!
Congratulations to the winner and rock on for using Blender!
I would love to see on of your free tutorials or to purchase one of your DVD training on Character Modelling,
please consider either of them and I will open my bank account for you!!!!
Thanks, Oliver! I look forward to the next's competition.
blink : Hahaha I see what you did there! But I will seriously consider the tutorial/DVD idea, though I have no idea where to even start.
Yung, your work is outstanding! Also you have a pretty clear ambitions so I think you'll get a success in gamedev as a director. Or I hope to :) My dream is to make small robots that will be made from details printed from models... Like new toys.. New generation.. kind of.
Kirill Poltavets: Thanks alot! I hope you will be able to achieve soon! Believe it or not, I HAD the same idea, and I still want to achieve it! Maybe when 3D printing is more accessible......which should be soon!
Yung, I think it's a matter of construction planning... If you're printing the whole model at moment or you're making a model with separate details in one piece (like in those sets for children) - is the second way not more economic? So you can print hollow halfs of details then assembly them with glue - you pay for thin "walls" as I think. Am I wrong?

ah yes, that will be a much better method, something like how plastics models are made so far.
There really is no need to do that - printing price (at Shapeways, at least) is based only on the amount of material that you use. Hollow parts are cheaper and we don't charge extra for complexity or printing time.
Hey Yung,
I also work for Shapeways - 3D printing HAS become a lot more accessible (although I don't know your budget, of course). You don't have to worry about assembling the model from loose parts to lower the price - just make a hollow model and use thin walls ( > .7mm minimum). We can even print moving parts in some materials although their design is a bit trickier.
Just let me know if you're interested and need some help!
Bart, how much shipping to Russia costs?
I'm afraid we can't ship to Russia at the moment as UPS doesn't support it right now. More info here:
