I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Why is this on BlenderNation?

It's a mediocre (and poorly modelled, judging by the poly count) character model, and it's not even rigged/animated. The texturing is incredibly basic, and even the render its self is pretty uninspired.

I come to BlenderNation to see the all the great work the Blender community is producing, not some amateurs first attempt at a virtual girlfriend.

          • I understood that from your initial disagreement. What exactly do you think is special, noteworthy, or interesting about this character?

          • Sorry mate, but I'm not going into a discussion to justify each post that I do here. I made a quick call, liked the character. If you don't like it, move along.

          • A news site features newsworthy things by definition. Blendernation is the #1 blender news resource. The fact that there is mediocre to bad stuff being posted solely for the sake of keeping the site busy is damaging Blender's reputation. You are helping Blender to keep its reputation of a hobbyist tool by that. People who come here will get the impression that this is the best you can do with it. If its not among the best stuff, why else would it be featured on here? Or is the purpose of blendernation to keep Blender users motivated by featuring their skill progress in public? In that case I guess I am wrong.

          • P.S. Yeh, I noticed there are ads on the site. So I guess that explains the need for keeping the site busy at the cost of quality ... ;)

          • Hmm... And by posting content that nobody is interested in is going to help traffic... I dont think so.

Obviously there are people interested in it.

The beauty of blender is that it is accessible

to hobbyists and pros alike and Blendernation reflects this. I think models like this one do inspire some people.

I agree that Blendernation should not get flooded with lower end work. Blendernation has a good spectrum of lower and higher end work.

Perhaps you guys should start a new site http://www.professional-blender-users-exclusive-club . com

Blendernation is the #1 Blender site for a reason.

          •  Guy, don't  evem think on grow up children! You are not qualified.

The model is sufficiently good gets  space in Blendernation.

    •  Wow, so much hate. Professionals start somewhere, other than you of course. I assume you were born "amazing" to begin with and were never an amateur proud of one of their works and desiring to share it with the "friendly" community.

Good show man, you're right. Blatant disregard and blind hatred will make it all better.

      • How exactly did you translate his critique to hate?
I think he has a perfectly sound point. The quality of posts I expect from the #1 site on blender news is high. You can flood it with garbage such as this render or limit the posts to amazing works that really inspire the community. I can hardly understand how anyone can be inspired by this.

  2. Blender Magician on

the model looks pretty good, some of the proportions are off, but that might just be how its supposed to be. did you model it with a reference image?

  3. I say fantastic post!

I come to Blender Nation to get inspired and educated about how many of the thousands of Blender users are.... drum roll... using blender... and be inspired to move from "watching" to "doing" myself. If I only ever wanted to see top notch production work, I'd go to the theater.I find that by seeing less than perfect attempts at using these tools, I feel that it is OK to try things, even if what I end up with is actually not perfect.  Especially if it is not perfect.   Because anyone that has done good work will tell you that it was only after allowing themselves the freedom to do years of not-perfect work.Case and point:  I do not read comics for the art, or the drawing.   I read them for what they convey.

To me this model conveys:  Rig me, Rig me, Rig me!   Then give it back to the community and see if someone can make her dance.

Great model to improve upon and it is CC-by,

Even though I do believe it can be used as is. after rigging it of course LoL

  5. I downloaded it, it needs a little love here and there , but great practice for rigify add-on...thanks Dani

  6. Hiding in plane sight on

    One.
Looks good.  Better than I can do definitely, though I intend to change that.
    Two.
So what if you think it's not good enough for a "best of Blender".  It gives me hope that I may actually aspire to something worthy of this 'site one day.
    Two-A.
And I've not heard of any newspapers releasing only a single page of content due to a "slow news day"  Nor a newscast shortening their format for a day because "nothing interesting happened today".  If you think this falls below your standards, by all means, submit something better.

Honestly, I thought it was good.  Perhaps it's my inexperience showing, but I saw nothing to disqualify it and plenty to recommend it.

  7. there are some issues with anatomy.  It looks like something that was made in 1st year of university. Its mediocre fanart . Thats not to say that the model is absolutely terrible. There is some effort and the fact he shared it is nice. However, blendswap has way way better character models than this

  8. Heads to big compared to the arms it looks very deformed LOL and shes got a steriod neck and a head large like a dude im going to have to agree with the Guest on this one but i like the new blender bmesh >XD or should i say love lol

  9. Mehmet PINARCI on

I like the model , I also do understand the beauty behind creating nice models with very little polygon count .

  10. Er, people hate this? This is my kind of art style cartoony and a lot of times celshaded... to each his own, I like it and I am not really into the "realistic" arty style. Keep it up.
