Tortoisaur

This character is mixture of a tortoise and a dinosaur and also an Iguana. I was very intimidated by texturing the scales but it actually turned out to be very easy.

I realised two things with this quick character. Zbrush is like cheating, well it feels like cheating just because it is so easy. Texturing was done pretty much in four hours and it looks pretty good.

Blender's sculpting is very good for many things but it simply can't handle the polycounts needed for surface detailing. Plus the tool-set of zbrush is out of this world. No wonder it is the industry standard.

Don't get me wrong, Blender's sculpting is far from being useless and is absolutely crucial to my work flow.I use Blender's sculpting for concept sculpts. Always tweaking meshes with Blender's sculpting.

The other thing I realised is that Blender Cycles is my favorite render engine by far. With the interactive nature of Cycles, materials are set up in a jiffy. I just can't wait for hair and sub-surface scattering(sss) in Cycles.

I used Blender to do the concept sculpt and all the modelling of Tortoisaur. Blender was used pretty much for everything on this character except for texturing and surface details.

    • Perhaps a tad too much glossyness that makes it look plastic. It might also be because of the character being out of context. Perhaps I will do a scene of him in his environment.

Real or Cartoony... that's what I was going for, stylized but still very detailed.

  1. Why is that once a week they bring us something like this? Is like they are running out of good news to show.
More effort looking for news to show please. I mean this dude surely as done progress but i don´t think this is something that should be boasted up in blendernation, I mean, here we spect a little more quality in news. Please, more effort the next time you you put in this website a new for us to see.
nice beginner model though, keep it up.

    • 'they' think it's worth sharing. Don't even start about putting more effort into maintaining this site.. In addition, when you write 'we', I think you mean 'I'. Other people enjoy this model.

      •  Agreed, if ya don't like the news then dont watch it! Although i am sure sewtrol really didn't mean to offend anyone with his comment, as for the model i love it , at first i thought what is that , then the concept grew on me immediately! Love the scales too!

      • I love Blendernation and I think you are doing a swell job Bart.

I appreciate the regular updates on Blendernation, even though some articles interests me more than others. I check Blendernation constantly for new posts.

    • Here is an idea Sewtrol, send something interesting, a good article source, or something else so you can contribute as well. I personally simply like seeing the render progress Cycles makes.

    • I can do a making of.

I think it might be better to do a full tutorial on the next character I do so I can do a full screen capture of the whole process.

      • Yeah, a making of would be good! :)
All the Tutorials are good and easy to follow, but I think people can learn more if they try to figure things out by themselves.
Then it's easier to use the skills for selfmade projects :)

        •  Sorry, I didn't mean "all the tutorials are good", but instead something like: "There are many useful tutorials out there"
          :D
But its a long time ago i've seen a useless tutorial though
