Renderfarm.fi Now Supports Cycles

21

Renderfarm.fi, the free community-powered Blender renderfarm, now supports Cycles through CPU rendering.

Nathan Letwory writes:

Finally, after months of work, testing, debugging and fixing we have Cycles as a supported engine on the farm. You'll get the power of Cycles through CPU rendering on our grid, with the supported feature set. To be able to upload Cycles sessions you should make sure you have the latest uploader version, which you can find at Blender bf-extensions SVN.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. But isn't CPU rendering expensive compared to GPU rendering? I mean, a GPU can render the same scene almost a 100 times faster than a CPU. It might be cheaper to just buy a GTX550 card for $300 to render your animation.

I also thought this can't be true, but a normal gtx 560 is 5 -8 times faster than 100 % percent load on all 6 kernels of a AMD X6 24 GHz (overclocked) and even runs smoother (you can edit while you watch it rendering, with a cpu the refreshing rate is just beyond acceptable. )

But if you do such a setup prepare yourself for buying 16 GB or more of RAM :)

    • I think it can render animations, because there was an animation with renderfarm.fi at some point(not using cycles), but I assume since animation can be done with cycles on a single computer, renderfarm.fi supports it too.

  2. Thanks for the nice comments everybody. I'm super happy as we've never been busier (and it's nice to be wanted). At the same time the farm sure could use more people rendering at the moment - something everybody would benefit from. If you have any spare computing cycles around be sure to join your computer to the grid! After all, it only takes you five minutes! :)

A word of advice to the renderfarm.fi folks: drop the NC and ND options from the CC licences that you allow. They do not offer “freedom” at all.

I didn’t want to type a URL. Yet your comment system automatically picked up a domain name and tried to interpret it as a URL. Thereby forcing me to fill in a CAPTCHA just to post my comment with a URL, when I didn’t even want to have a URL in my comment!

      Not very polite.

  4. Did Renderfarm.fi close down? I haven't been able to get to their site in over a week and before it broke they had a million sessions waiting to be approved by admin and no sessions being rendered. It's like the people that run the site vanished.
