    •  Wrong! What your eyes are looking at may not be the actual source of the sound, the microphone might be recording something more distant - like a ship, yet louder then what we are looking at.
      Reminds me of comments like:"oh, but the shadows don't match..." I've seen real life scenes with my own eyes where shadows did not match, real life is not always believable.
       
      Yeah, the sound don't match, the shadows don't match.... Just because it does not match does not mean it is less real.

        The times I have seen real life objects with non-matching shadows, are the times that I hadn't thought about all possible light sources. After studying the scenario for a while, I find the shadows DO match.

        In this particular spot, the sound doesn't match because of 2 reasons (though reason number 2 is less dealing with the sound):

        A.) The sound gives a sense of movement - for example, the waves moving in small bursts and schlopping against the side of a ship. This is perfectly fine, but the small bursts of movement do not coincide with the movement of the water in the video. In real life, even if it were far away, the sound would 'sync up' at least a little bit.

        B.) The water seems to move around haphazardly, the waves not flowing from a specific direction, but rather moving in several directions at different times. In real life, there is always a cause for waves: tremors in the Earth, wind, or objects moving above, under, or through the water. Because of these uniform sources, the waves should, in general, travel in the same direction. Sure, it would be perfectly natural for a few waves to travel in the opposite or in random directions, but there should be a majority of waves traveling in a specific direction.

        • That is my point. For example: strong and narrow light might be bouncing of a window to a persons face and all the buildings in the background would have shadows falling in different direction then that of a persons nose for example. I've seen cases like this and people complaining how it is a composite because shadows don't match. Yes you are right shadows do actually match but we are getting into semantics and word twisting now. The point is this: just because something is seemingly out of place it does not mean it is not real and faked.

      • I does not match. I can bet you all you want that this is sound of waves hitting the shore. If the visual is for you matching this that we are probably from different planets.
        Its a lovely work anyways, I love visual. I like sound. But they don't match each other at all.

        • Please read again carefully. I never said that it matches.  My point is that you might get results like that in real life. MY point is you can get something that does not match in real life shot as well.  Would it fit the picture? Not really but it would be real and not fake.

            Yes I admit my first word should not be
            wrong and I admit that maybe I expressed myself a bit awkwardly (my
            apologies to Lampros Liontos) but I believe people here know what I
            meant and understand me. Just like you know perfectly well what was
            it that I meant to say and what the point I was trying to make was.
            You are simply picking on someone else's words and the way they
            expressed themselves.

            Everyone here has their opinion on the
            video and we should share it. Let's not agree on it. In fact it would
            be strange if everyone did agree. But you are not commenting the
            animation anymore, you are picking on the way I expressed myself.

            Even before with your comment with
            shadows matching or not matching. If the shadows on the girls face
            (for example) are going left and on every other object is throwing
            shadow in the opposite direction can you say they match???? Yes they
            match their light sources but not each other (to me that is just word
            spinning) and it would seem like composited photo even thou it would
            be a straight shot. And just like sometimes scenes like this seem
            fake even if they are not, it might be possible to encounter
            situations like this not just with light but other factors as well.
            Like sound.

            Just because my first word is wrong
            that does not mean I said it matches 100%. My point was that it this
            is what you might get in real life as well. MIGHT! And that it does
            not have to match to be real. In real life footage you get things
            that don't seem right and yet this is how they are. Just because
            something seems out of place it does not mean that it really is.

            In my personal opinion the sound does
            not diminish the quality of this here above the average animation of
            water and if someone would change the sound I would not enjoy it more
            just like I do not enjoy it less with the sound that it has.

            And hey, this file is on the Blend Swap
            and all the files on Blend Swap are under some version of CC license.
            If anyone feels they can do better, by all means, download it and do
            it, animate it, add the sound of your choice and show us the work.

          •  But in CG illusion of realism is often more important than realism. You want to convince the viewer, not to mimic the reality.

  1. Just some constructive crits: The water could use more small surface displacements. Try increasing the resolution maybe. Perhaps some particles or fish moving under the water. Also, how exactly is the camera staying perfectly still in the middle of the ocean? Add some camera movement to match with the wave peaks.

    •  Yet, real life footage is sometimes digitally  stabilized to remove a camera shake. Even the ocean is sometimes camera tracked. Besides with no point to lock on, you would not know that the camera is moving a little.

  2. Excellente!  Looks exactly correct for a gentle ocean viewed from a distance of just a few feet, i.e. right next to your raft :-)
    I like the hexagonal lens bokeh effects.

  3. That looks really great, but the sound is not good. :-(  I cant see any high wave, but it sounds like big waves in a strom...

  4. Looks amazing! Very realistic.

    I tried rendering the blend file and I didn't get the lovely specular reflections and glints. Any idea why?

La matiere comporte un SSS donc ill y a une première passe qui semble plate. je n'ai aucun problème de rendue avec ce fichier. Je suis désolé pour la traduction anglaise qui vient de Google.

  5. DOF makes it look like water in a bowl - tiny. Shouldnt be used in some distant scenes that you want to show something big. For tiny closeup looks very good though

  7. Perhaps change the caption from "Bender" to "Blender"! 
    Bender means something rather different, at least in the UK ;-)
