Naruto Live Action Chapter One

So this is a live action I did where the main baddie is a puppet. If you know a lot about naruto it will make 100% sense but if not its still ok. So the puppet is all done in blender. It was a pain to animate considering this is only the second thing I have animated. But tell me what you think. Hope you're not too brutal with my work. Thanks.

All done in blender and I used After Effects to composite it. I also used a lot of Mocah to tracy some of the shots.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. The Slowmos seemed a bit odd. It think in the fight scene there should have been more edits, the camera was too far away.
But the fire effects were great. Was that Blender or stock footage? (if footage, where from?)

all in all nice VFX and compositing.

  2. Fantastic! You told a story - finished and uploaded.  Only flaws are ones you can practice away. Keep going!!!

    •  I can't agree more! You finished a project, and did a great job with it! This was better than most of the production television shows from the 80's and 90's. Perfect? No. The mismatch of the voice really disconnected me. Tiny tweaks here and there, but soo much better than most stuff I see posted on the internet. I'm assuming your young? You have a great head start, better than many adults. I'm impressed and jealous!

Thanks so much. Yes I'm slightly young I'm only 19. And I would 100% agree with your assessment. And thank you again for the support.

  3. awesome, so next episode the person wich controlled that puppet (sintel?) will show up? XD just wondered... shouldn't there be a person controling that puppet?

    • Strider Moore on

yes there is suppose to be a person controlling the puppet I hope to be able to incorporate him in chapter If I can start that project soon. I'm waiting to see more publicity from the venires and i'll need to recruit people to help me in chapter 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.

  4. Great practice, some very good photography, and a nice use of different effects.   The use of fire was great, the doppleganger was interesting.  The throwing knives came out surprisingly well done when the puppet attacked the lead character - sort of set me back a bit when he got hit.    And although the puppet wasn't the best antagonist, it was still well textured, pretty well lighted, and moderately well animated.   All in all, you had ALOT going on in that short movie.  Amazing that this is only your second foray.

You will likely improve a ton as you've already got a gift for camera shots and angles, and the stones to try very ambitious projects.

Thank you. This has been one of my favorite comments. its motivational and helps me to remember that my work is going somewhere thank you again :)

  5. I think I enjoyed this.
Great variety of 3D models and effects coming together.  Good editing as well.
Any critique would fall towards the audio, some of the dialogue seemed "read" and not "thought/felt", not that it needs to be dramatic though.  The battle sounds and footsteps rang well however.
Oh, and you did just make a short story to share, so congrats!

  6. Alexander Kasper on

Really cool! Yeah, the animations could be better and some of the lighting was a bit off so the compositing didn't work that well...whatever! Kudos to you for doing the complete thing and the camera angles and editing was very good! So keep going, this is a great milestone!

  7. Your ability to produce a story, create assets in a 3D program, and composite into a film is awesome.  You kept my attention the whole time.  Sweet job.  Keep it up.

  8. Lawrence D’Oliveiro on

Terrific effects. In terms of pacing, I think you spent too much time explaining about the shadowclone. There’s no need to spell it all out in tedious detail; sometimes a little bit of ambiguity and enigma can add to the drama. Just some overall hints about what’s going on should be enough.

  9. This is kind of weird.

They are ninjas, you usually don't see katanas in Naruto. Sasuke has one, but is not curved.

He uses a Sharingan and a Great Fireball,  so he is an Uchiha, right?

So this is when Naruto was a child-age. Before Uchiha were destroyed by Itachi/Madara

    Please confirm/explain,

    Thanks

Also Puppet was creepy, I think a more cartoon like will be better

    • Strider Moore on

Yea you don't see a lot of katanas in naruto. I wanted to use one for that very reason though it could through people off. Also this takes place 35 years after naruto shippuuden so after the uchiha where destroyed by Itachi Uchiha. So to explain why I have a sharingan is that mine is a stolen one. I haven't decided from where yet honestly but I'll be explaining it if I can crate a chapter 2.

I'm glad you thought the puppet was creepy thanks :)

  10. Very good!
But you need to get someone to help as a cameraman (or woman). Your camera needs some movement in the fight scenes.
The static camera is ok in the reflective mood scenes, but seems odd in the dynamic fight scenes.

    • Strider Moore on

This is so true. I wanted to have a moving camera but i couldn't get that cause I had no crew. I was the actor, cameraman, director, editor, etc. haha

  11. As a long time fan of Naruto, and someone, who understands Japanese well, I have to say, that I'm really disappointed.
Putting the story aside, the dialogues were bad, the acting insufficient/unrealistic, the Japanese incorrect (probably some google translation or something of the sort), and the fight was kind of lame - you didn't seem like a powerful "ninja", but like some ordinary kid running around and trying to look cool.

If you're doing it just for yourself, so you can be the hero you'd like to be, or to try out some special effects, then it's probably fine. But if you want to impress lots of people (including enthusiastic fans), you have to go beyond the surface, really enter that world and catch its atmosphere. It's not always easy, but it's worht it.

Finally I'd like to say, that some of the SFX looked nice though, and that I appreciate that you really made something (not just a short test) and had the courage to post it online. Keep going, improving, and show us something really great next time! ;)

    • Thank you for you brutal honesty. If i get support to make chapter 2 i'll keep what you said in mind and do my very best to really pull people into the story and world of naruto and make things impressive.

You must choose you side - to be an actor or CG artist. 50/50 works well in rare cases. Or (probably) you'll make a lot of "fun videos" until you get bored and throw this away... Or you'll choose. Or (maybe) you're a genius... then go to actor's lessons! :)

  13. My son and his friends were always making action movies.  First they used GI JOES to make stop action footage, including the GI JOE helicopter which they had sliding on some fishing line.   Then they themselves became the actors doing remakes of Jack Bauer action sequences, to include sound effects and some visual effects.   Some of which were hilarious.
All in all, although amateurish, they were fun to watch and great exercises in creativity.   Much better in my mind than simply sitting and watching TV.   This kind of short reminds me of those.   Drive on.

  14. While the story is not up to my taste, that's some very good editing work, very nice special effect.
Impressive what can be done with Blender.

  15. Wow, I'm very impressed with the vfx for so many Naruto-specific elements. Well done to you for making any such naruto fanfilm with this level of dedication - good job, hope you keep it up! My criticisms would just be the overdone fx (screen-crack and chromatic/lens effects during the knife throwing; the twitchy titles at start), and second basically what's been said about the spoken/acted parts. As I'm a naruto fanatic used to watching the anime in japanese for many years, I found the american emphasis of things like 'jootsu' and 'sharingaan' very strange - and it seemed weird saying the fireball attack in english instead of 'katon goukakyuu no jutsu'. Yet the 'katsu' for the clay spider-bomb 'release' was fine. Would you say "rasengan" or "spiral twirl"? It's a weird mix - maybe pick one language and stick to it. "Kunai knife" (really?) -- would that not be "throwing knife knife"? etc. But to end positively - the chakra fx of the puppet's sword attack look absolutely perfect!

Lol everyone here is so picky. It was awesome. Great job and I Want to see chapter 2! Most important thing is to finish your projects. You will learn and improve a lot. (long time Naruto fan here)

  17. First off, I totally agree you kicked butt on this, especially considering you got through all the aspects of pre-production, production, post-production and as they said above, got it in the can.  That's a lot more than most people will ever do.

The comments from Naruto fans may seem a bit overboard, but that's only because they are hardcore fans and they have very specific ideas of how things should be.  This is a good lesson, that when making a movie about something established whether it is Naruto, Lord of the Rings, or Harry Potter, that some of the audience will probably be very detail oriented.  Try your best to keep the spirit and run the script by a few fans first to see what they get stuck on :)

Keep making episodes!  Experience will help you fine tune everything, and make for some great entertainment for us!

Thank you all for the advise, praise, and opinions its what makes me create work like this. to show people and get there opinions and reactions. So again thank you.
