Meet your Oracle - Scientific Visualization

A Blender Game engine project by Dalai Felinto.

Dalai Felinto writes:

The AAAS is an international scientific conference, that concentrates scientists from all over the world. Blender clearly couldn't be left out of this.

This project was part of the NF-UBC Nereus Program presentation in the conference. A study on finding an efficient way to communicate global data and scientific models to the general audience.

The Oracle is a virtual avatar who will walk you through a journey of knowledge and discovery. In this installation (a prototype) there is one single question to address the oracle: "Will there be enough sea food and a healthy ocean for the future generations to enjoy?".

In order to give you an answer the oracle has to ask you questions. Your answers will define what future ocean you will be seeing.

A screen dump of the whole interaction can be seen here:

This project used the Blender Game Engine for the whole interaction with the user (the oracle animations, the mouse handling, playing the videos, …). It includes lip-synced animations, cut-scenes and video playbacks.

All the videos were made with Blender using assets from a previous project (showed in the "learn more" option). The time budget was really short and we had a team of only two people working in Blender for this.

For more details in the techniques and the process please check the full post.

I'm personally very happy to use Blender for scientific communication projects. It seems a great match and despite some difficulties we are all very pleased with the result (and the responses) we had for this first installation.

  1. Fantastic !!!, I hope to see some day a DVD where you could show us your techniques !!! Nice integration.

  2.  I think ecosystems will self balance in long period of time. Extinct species will be replaced by other, more adapted to new environment conditions.

  3. I think ecosystem in disbalanced state can be only limited amount of time. If some species overgrow and consume resources faster, than resources can regrow, finally they run out of food, and population starts to decrease or extinct. Only species in equilibrium with environment survive. And sooner or later everything balanced again.
