The Invasion - Animated Short in 3 Days

Inspired by a thread on CGTALK, I tried to make an animated Shortfilm in a very short amount of time from scratch.

It was scripted, storyboarded, designed, build, animated, rendered, composited and edited in a couple of days in my freetime on one Computer. It's completely made in BLENDER and rendered with CYCLES on GPU.

  1. This would've been quite an accomplishment if it was done in 3 weeks. This little short has something that's lacking in a lot of professional animations: appeal and creativity. Great job!

  2. Sweet! Though it looked more like a trailer than a short imho.
It would probably take me a month to create it tbh, so hats off to you Mr. FalkM!

      • Initially it was intended to use premade Assets and Library files for this Challenge. But I wondered what one can do if he makes it from scratch. So Spheres and Tetrahedrons for me. ^_^ I really struggled how to call it. It looks too simple for a cinematic, begins like a short and ends like a trailer. In hindsight I think it is simply a teaser.

        Next Animation will be longer.

  3. Excellent! Gripping and funny at the same time. animation and story work in the short timespan.
    Very inspiring.

    Thank you.

  4. I love the atmosphere and especially the epic shot of the evil leader with billowing cape on the rock ledge:)  awesome work!

  5. Interesting!! Loved the clay style and the way you told the story/shot selection. I would be very interested in seeing more!!

  6. Wonderful! Your technical achievement is worthy, but I'm blown away by how invested I am in the story and characters after just a one minute teaser. Well done (here's hoping you further develop the story).

  7. I like the Cube's gun, how did you make the muzzle-flash move like that?
Was it just a mesh that was keyed? particles? or something else

  8. This... this is hilarious. And awesome. And, please, if this took you 3 days, then won't you spend a few weeks on a full production? :)

  9. amazing work, really love it, make a movie from it and i will watch it in the cinema for real, never seen such a thing before.
    keep it up

  10. Wow , nice job !Every 3D artist know than 3days gone really fast for doing a entire project.
I love details like the bird in the tree did a poo ;)
    Well done!

Just a question: Where we can find soundtrack and sounds effects free of charge?

  11. Nice, playful use of simple geometry, a story told in just a few seconds and the whole thing produced in only 3 days!. Makes me think of Edwin Abbot Abbot's book 'Flatland- A Romance of Many Dimensions' brought into 3D. If you don't know 'Flatland' it was written in the mid 1880's, it's relatively short and absolutely fantastic. Read it while Blender renders. Who wins?

  12. Wow thank you so much guys!!!!

    Answers to some questions:

I will definitely make more! Had so much fun working on this. I'm
currently brainstorming Ideas and write a script for the first episode.
It will be longer with a bit more detail and better animations.

Rendertime: It was rendered with cycles (besides some mist passes in BI)
and rendertime was 29 seconds on average and never exceedet 1 minute
per frame on a gtx 460 GPU. I can safely say without Cycles and the
viewport rendering it would not be possible to do this thing so fast.
Cycles NEVER crashed, had no artefacts, nothing. It simply worked. So
big thanks to the mighty Brecht.

Cube: The Cube Man at the end is indeed inspired by the poor Blender
Cube we all delete in a new scene. This time he's the Hero ^_^

Suzanne will absolutely have an appearance somewhere in the next
installment. Maybe as an Oracle or the like.

Again thanks to all of you. Never thought that someone would want to
    watch this stuff.

  13. Very good job and inspiring!

This would be a fun project for people to try once a month. A good exercise in project and time management! Maybe those interested could get together to pick a subject. Time limit for making the project. Min/Max length of animation. And then everyone go for it. Just for fun!

BTW. If you've only watched this once. Watch it again full screen. There are a lot of little details I missed  the first time through. For instance the spheres flag bearers eyes. (I missed that one because I was laughing about the sphere with the binoculars!) What the bird in the tree does as the camera pans by. The apparent fear in the eyes of some of the spheres on the wall.

  14. Super! - Made me smile. I's be interested in the following if you would be kind enough to share.

    scripted, storyboarded, designed

These are the areas I struggle with. I've seen how the professionals do it but my efforts fall short and I'd be interested to see what other blenderheads produce for their shorts.

    Cheers
    TNS
