Developer Meeting Notes, January 29, 2012

Blender 2.62 release is still planned for 2.5 weeks from now, FFmpeg gets an update and new render passes for Cycles are being looked in to.

Ton Roosendaal writes:

Here's the notes from today's IRC meeting:

1) Blender 2.62 planning

  • We're now in "BCon3", the new features are in svn now and get fixed or finalized.
  • Release planning still valid, 2.62 could be out in about two-and-a-half weeks.
  • Proposal: let's do a call for an official test build mid this week already. And then do a week later an official RC.
  • Sergey Sharybin mentions: FFmpeg has 0.10 release, which will get added to Blender now. He can do this for Linux and Windows, will need help from Jens Verwiebe for OS X.
  • 2.62 Release log in progress. (Brecht, could you update this with Carve, Cycles, as you did so wonderfully for 2.61?)
  • Remark: can Cycles get more passes, like light contribution or shadow? Brecht looks into it.
  • The 2.62 Splash Committee is: Kevin Hays, Per Gantelius and Wray Bowling.

2) Other projects

Thanks,

-Ton-

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. It's a pleasure to see the speed of this dev.
I played a little bit with cycles in the 2.61 version - i love it, great thing. ( I love also the internal...)

  2. Big big thanks to Ton and the all team working so hard. I'm sure that this new release is gonna be as awesome as the others.

  3. Thanks to all developers for the amazing work.
Are the onion UV tools going to be already implemented in 2.62? they seem to be already stable and useful

  4. Some time ago, the blender development fund contributed money to the OpenCL compositor redesign. Does anyone know what the status of that branch is? Last thing I found about it was Jeroen Bakker's talk at bconf2011 on youtube and it looked really impressive.

Also, I was wondering how this compositor will interact with Cycles, as both will be using the GPU. Are there any ideas about that already?

  5. Everyone on the dev team, your work simply blows my mind. Seriously. Thanks so much for all of your hard work. Mark my words, I'm going to get courses taught in Blender here at EMU yet.

  6. Great work on all of the above! Would love to hear something on the 'skin modifier' status from a few months back. Is it still in consideration for development? Just curious...

    • You can still get that now, just render the exact same scene inside BI (in a different scene, but same .blend file) and take only the speed vector from it.

  7. Many thanks to all the team, i agree that every Blender release comes with very usefull and quality functionnalities ...
