Endi is this really a surprise? If you knew much about Blenderguru you would know that he prizes realism and encourages his pupils toward it. This is an incredible image.

This is definitly a realistic render and the technical skills of the authors are excellent. Nevertheless I think the composition is at best “medium”. It doesn’t tell a story or produces much emotions (at least for me…can’t speak for the other ;-) ).

A good entry which could have become a great one

Besides from it being photo-realist, what is the point of it? It’s ugly, cmon, you guys must surely see it.

Go and have a look at some (amateur) underwater photo’s and I think you’ll see why this deserved to win – Zagupi managed to recreate the feeling of an underwater shot very, very well.

How do you know that it is a rendering and not a photo?

You could always take a look at the scene file :)

Congratulations. 1st place is well deserved. Thank you very much for sharing the scene file. I expected tthe scene  to be much more complex. Good job!

Well I think it is both very atmospheric and beautifully rendered. How can you dismiss that subtle use of light, colour and texturing as “just photorealistic”?

    It deserves to win, imho.
    It is technically astounding.
Anyone who has “scubed” a bit should recognize that the underwater feeling is well recreated.
The wrecked boat hints at some story behind: the seer was maybe looking for it? Was it the boat where he/she went fishing with his/her father?
This is one example (alas, there are not so many around these days) of photorealism well used in CG art.

Simple is often best. Very effective image. And the other top entries are quite spectacular as well.
Id say Tonituo’s entry is my personal favourite of the bunch.

outstanding entries, the whale shark one was a pretty strong but this one is really breathtaking. I love the simplicity of it and the claustrophobic nature there is just a wall of black outside of that light.

Would have been cool if he added The Blender monkey head there half buried on the sea floor, realistic looking with render and textures and yet improbably unreal.

Like this the story seems to be some kind of anthropological finding of a primal sea faring culture and yet I think the Canoe would have to be made of metal to remain like that after all this time since wood tends to rot and wither.

Impressive piece because of its dark dead ambiance and realism, makes me wonder how the render was accomplished.

Is a great image but to consider that this render must win maybe Andrew must see the entire job in the .blend. You can do a simple scene and use an external renderer to get a great image like this. Otherwise this image is the best of all in my opinion.

I just checked the .blend, and, really, the most impressive part about this project is the compositing node setup, plus some smart scene setup. I give full marks there. However, artistically, I think this is not a very interesting render—realistic or not. It’s like saying that lunar surface photography holds any artistic value. Sure, there’s a boat at the bottom of the ocean—big deal. It’s just not telling me any story. Sorry to sound so contrary and negative, it’s honestly how I feel about this piece. Peace.
