Emergency Templates

We had severe server problems the last few days, and I decided to install a 'light' theme - something I had been working on for a while anyway. I also decided to try the Disqus commenting system as it would further remove load from our webserver. I'll keep working on a full redesign, but for the time being this will have to do.

As a bonus, there's now a HUGE amount of space for art (which is what this community is all about, after all). Like with the old layout, the banners rotate daily. If you'd like your artwork to feature here, send a 1000x288 pixel image to bart @ this site, and include your name and a link for the credits. Please don't add your own text to the image.

I'll keep you posted on my progress, thanks for hanging in here with me :)

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Wow - a new template and it's not April 1st :D
Very cool theme, the design is elegant and beautiful. Also, Time to warm up my Blender, a new banner is something I would really enjoy making.

    Thanks for maintaining the site!

  2. Fine with the new template (although it's a bit dull) Love the decent size space to show art. Detest Disqus with a passion. I really don't want dataminers combining all my comments from unrelated websites all over the net into one big database, ripe for the selling, complete with uniquely identifying Gravatar..

    •  Interesting. No Gravatar. Still bad, but not as much as I thought. I *do* understand that sites like this can cost a packet to run though. Personally I'd just rather see things like affilliate links to relevant Blender products which a) pay more and c) support Blender businesses (and thus Blender) and c) don't invade my privacy. Anyway, thanks for the great site. <3in seeing the big, big art at the top!

      • I'm not making any money by using Disqus - I made the choice because I needed to get as much load off my server as I could. I understand your point about datamining, but to be honest it would already be easy for them to do so..

  3. would be great if the ads and the about the author box were on the far right ... but other than that I can live with the change

      • A well deserved rest .... it's looking good.  When you get back to tweaking, I noticed that the menu dropdown's don't contrast well with the white background perhaps these could be a very dark grey instead.

Also a couple of issues on Android mobile browser ... but these can wait.

  4. For some reason everything is crammed onto the left side of thescreen in the mobile version (viewing on an iPod touch 4)

  5. Hey, I really like the new layout. One thing you could try, Bart is changing the size of the font. Isn't the font a little too big? And maybe space between the lines is also too big (BlenderNation title and it's tagline should also be closer to each other to look better). Because of these two things you have to scroll more when there are many comments. But beside that, the changes are very good in my opinion. Good idea with the bigger artwork.

  6. the template looks really nice. I especially like the large art header. There are many beautiful artworks, might as well show them off.
