I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Lovely stuff but tbh some low res smoke simulations (especially the bluish one on white background)
look a bit out of place. Congratulations to all the artists and studios included! BTW Ian Hubert rocks!
BF should definitely get this guy for Mango!
Thanks for giving us this awesome application people! Wish you all the best!

  2. It is amazing! Very professional, I also agree that the video should be placed on the main website. Also everyone should spread this video over facebook/twitter etc :)

  3. Now that I had the chance to see the full reel in peace all I can say is congrats to everybody who's work is on it. It's amazing how many talented people are using Blender. Three cheers to Mike also for editing it all together in such a wonderful way.

@DimitrisC: I agree. In fact Ton announced at the SIGGRAPH Blender Community BOF that Ian will be the director for Mango. :-)

  4. This is so good. Even the walk cycle is exciting here :)
This is a proud achievement - coders and artists alike (I include the music sound matters too).

Cheers and thanks to all who contributed,

    Arnaud

  5. That's the Rell that will represent blender at Siggraph 2k11?

With all do respect since I had no doubts, but for anyone who had a doubt blender could be seen as a professional tool. This is the final dot on that doubt, it looks amazing, simply fantastic! I really wish to shake hands with every man or woman who worked on those clips personally.

Seriously congratulations! Blender for the win!

  6. The thing that struck me when watching this compilation was how weak Sintel looked by comparison. I liked the look of Sintel when I first saw it -- I didn't understand the guys complaining about it saying it looked "video-gameish" ... but looking at it alongside some of the other stuff in the reel... yeah, I think it paled in comparison...

  7. I just want to say, thanks to the community. Watching the video inspires (and I also vote it should go on the Blender home page) and makes a person start to dream big about what they can accomplish with open source software.

I wouldn't be where I am without all of the amazing support from the community. I'm still fairly mediocre, but I've gone leaps and bounds since I first started. I love seeing stuff like this.

  8. here is many people who crying because there is many good works are missing from this reel

the solution is simple: the community can make an other reel...

  9. Anyone have a list of all the videos these are from? I've seen quite a few, but a lot I haven't and would love to take a look at the ones I've missed.

    Thnks

  10. this feels as a reel which does not know what it wants.
the selected work is way to diverse in quality and depth.
too much looks like space filler for the very good pieces of CG work in the reel.

  11. cekuhnen:
Yeah, i had the same feeling of this reel. It would need some kind of "story" and tricks that keeps you intrested of it or thing that continues throught the whole video.

Of course there is a lot of super nice works and i enjoyed nearly everything, but the directing of this clip did not impres me so much. Iit was just a pile of the differend (nice) videos in the same file with nothig shared.

  12. It believe it is less of a demo reel, and more something which would have been looping over and over on monitors in the background. Therefore think it works well. Shows different aspects of blender. Some look like game engine stuff, some modeling, and some full animation.

  13. The corollary to this, is that a little bit of well-placed weaker material can help a strong piece to really pop and stand out.
