SoC - New Blender UV tools

10

UV mapping can at the best of times be a daunting experience, and as such is one of the areas in Blender that is being developed as part of the GSoC. Some very handy and convenient improvements are being made to the current UV tool-set and there are many more to come. Here are two preview videos from separate blender branches on the UV tool-set and its development.

Shuvro Sarker from the avocado branch - Automatic UV Seams

Riakiotakis Antonis from the onion branch - UV Editing Tools

  1. Quite Agree SeanJM.

I see alot of video Tutorials out there that move so fast and usually full of mistakes. If they went over there mistakes correctly and still slowed the pace down then they would be no worse off for timing!
Think the secret is to note things down first to assist ones memory. Still alot of good tuts. out there. Look forward to the day that I will contribute my own.

    Keep Blendering Every one!

    Remember -: CONSTANT & FAITHFUL!!

  2. Yes Weskus, I agree, but are these tuts or demos ?

I think that I should become a tutorial certification authority.

Even Blender Cookies has didacticly miserable tuts. Those are sometimes good for the people who know allready 80 percent of the matter. I for one cannot stand hearing 2 times a wrong word and then the correct one.

  3. Heh. Coming from Maya to Blender, the current UV mapping tools are already stunningly undaunting. Not that I don't look forward to the new additions, of course:)

  4. I don't have a problem with free informative videos of certain long lengths, because it takes more words to explain than to merely declare something, and I think they're sometimes necessary, though I'm a different breed of person, I suppose.

But as for these in particular, I mean, the longer one is just 8 minutes. And it's being done by the developers themselves explaining their work so far. They're reviewing development progress, not teaching tutorials or giving a SIGGRAPH presentation of something. I don't see need the need for speaker to be perfect for these kind of videos. Don't be so nitpicking, guys.

Anyways, I look forward to these tools soon! Anything to make UV unwrapping an easier process. I thank you developers for your awesome progress with these UV editing and unwrapping developments!

  5. I might be mistaken but I think I have seen both of these videos about 2-3 weeks ago; great progress and it is looking really cool, but isn't this kind of old news?... yeah checking youtube I was correct. July 17th was when these videos were uploaded; so I am curious how much more progress has been made.

  6. Not too much new stuff in Onion I am afraid, a lot of time had to go to maintenance of old features and improvement requests. New stuff in UV tools in onion are some edge marking tools for UV (Not very well functioning at the moment, but code is there so a matter of a few lines to work), snapping for smart stitching, export weights in UV space and smooth brushes(worked on right now and being in a very good completion state though not actually working in the branch right now).

  7. I am very interested in the improvements in UV Tools - more exactly the ability to tidy up the islands when using Subsurf in UV. When will this be in Blender? I can't see it in 2.59: Is it there?
