Call for help with autowalker script

11

The Tube team needs some help with their Autowalker script. Are you a the Python guru they need?

Bassam Kurdali writes:

Hey folks. a while back Josh Wedlake wrote a script for autowalking, which we would need to put together crowd scenes of cockroaches in the subway. The time has come where we’re actually doing the animation parts, but unfortunately, massive changes to the API have rendered the script non-functional. Josh is currently deep into his graduation animation project, and I’m swamped with many tasks, rendering the time for understanding and fixing the script out of my reach for the moment.

Tal came up with the idea of putting out a public call instead of a in-list internal one, since the script is pretty self-contained. Most of the incompatibilities stem from changes to mathutils. I’ve made a stab at fixing things, but there’s a lot left, and it’s possible I’ve done the wrong thing, since I don’t fully understand his code so script still doesn’t work. If you’re game download the .blend and give it a go! as a bonus, you’ll get a (mostly) walking (get it?) autowalker, and your name in the credits.

Reply at their blogpost if you can help. Thanks!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. As I ve started being critical I ll continue-- No, I would n't bother, we don't often film people walking for any length of time and don't watch it. The animation could be done by hand for any short actions. Its a tad sinister and aggressive. People who copy your walk are really out to get you. I don't think it is for "us".

  2. Ok, sorry for the 3rd comment in a row, but had to tell you folks, it's been fixed!! thanks to the awesome blender community, and to blendernation for spreading the word :)
    Happy days!

  3. @Duncan

You know, automatic walking is useful when you need to shot a street with people on it that does something besides standing doing nothing, obviously not the main characters, or you expect that freelancers do the job to animate a whole "in the city" scene by hand? Yeah it doesn't look "artistic" enough, but these scripts helps things become do-able. I'm still waiting for the offset/deform trick to come back.

Hope this project gets the attention it deserves.

  4. Chrome Monkey on

@Cloud_GL, I'm pretty sure we were being trolled. Duncan likely knows from the picture and article that it was a crowd of roaches being animated, and not a crowd of people. Best to ignore the trolls.

  5. I see through this. I know roaches are anti-social and don,t like crowds you just want to talk about films about football and rugby. Films which did hire CG Artists.

  6. @Chrome Monkey, oh I see, didn't see through that... Didn't notice that this script was aimed at insects though.
