Pixologic releases Sculptris (for Windows and Mac)!

Sculptris was picked up by Pixologic and they are presently allowing a free download which is why I’m mentioning it again. As far as I can tell there are no restrictions on its use. The full press release and links are below

Pixologic, Inc., maker of the Award-Winning ZBrush software is pleased to announce the latest release of Sculptris (for Windows and MAC).
For the past 10 years Pixologic has been recognized for its ground-breaking innovation, “cool” creativity and tools that are as user friendly as they are powerful and natural-feeling. These tools enable artists in many industries to open new vistas of possibility with their skills and imagination. The development and latest release of Sculptris is consistent with the Pixologic ethos and spirit to help artists both shine at and enjoy creating art — intuitively, without having to worry about technical barriers!
3D Sculpting and Painting Become Easy with Sculptris
Sculptris is an elegant and simple 3D modeling solution, offering artists a platform to harness their imagination and create 3D sculpts in a way that is unique to the digital world.
Tomas Pettersson, the bright young programmer and brainchild behind Sculptris commented: “I trust that, with this version, Sculptris will be more accessible for all people on both PC’s and Mac’s. Everyone should be able to sculpt!”
Sculptris introduces a dynamic tessellation system, giving its user the capability to sculpt or paint freely on any part of the surface without having to worry about underlining geometry. With Sculptris, triangles are automatically added as needed, and only to the areas where a stroke has been applied to the surface.
Users can do just about anything that’s possible with real clay. For example, they can pull, twist and pinch the surface, easily adding volume as needed without the rigorous attention to underlying structure that is typically associated with 3D modeling programs.
Pixologic envisions Sculptris as an entry level “eye opener” for a new generation of artists wishing to explore 3D sculpting and digital creation. Fun to use, it’s also a truly effective tool that can be embraced by hobbyists and professional artists, alike.
For those wishing to explore further, Sculptris is seen as a perfect ground level upon which to build one’s skills while advancing to the substantial “world of ZBrush.”
GoZ
With the new GoZ integration in Sculptris, artists can now seamlessly move their creations between Sculptris and ZBrush with the click of a button.
Navigational Controls
The navigation controls in Sculptris have been enhanced from earlier releases of the software and are now similar to those in ZBrush. This makes it effortless to go between the two applications while also helping Sculptris to serve as a stepping stone toward mastery of ZBrush.
Availability
The new version of Sculptris is currently available as a free download at: pixologic.com/sculptris.
Experienced Sculptris users and first timers alike are encouraged to try out the new release, have fun playing with it, and most important—make great artwork! All are invited to share their creations in the Sculptris forum at ZBrushCentral. The forum provides a common ground for Sculptris artists to share and communicate with other Sculptris users, as well as the many industry-leading artists who frequent ZBrushCentral.

    2. I can highly recommend this!! It’s a really slick experience.

GoZ makes the work-flow between this and ZBursh so much smoother.

I just WISH they would release the GoZ SDK for Blender. :(

    3. Awesome!

    5. Seems they need to fix their form submission. I’ve used this in the past and I have to say .. I loved it. Hands down the BEST sculpture tool. I liked ZBrush, but it feels over blown and clunky these days. It’s great that we have a tool professional quality for FREE that can be used. Blender is great, don’t get me wrong. But it’s not made as a sculpting tool. It has the addon which increases the value. But having something like Sculptris in your bag makes life that much easier.

Now .. if I could only get the new version .. hehe

I loved it. Hands down the BEST Skulptur-Tool.

    7. Hm, my comment didn’t go up… Let’s try this again:

Very nice to finally see this for Mac, as Sculptris was always kind of buggy in Wine. Thank you Pixologic!

    8. Sculptris does look really cool, especially with the GoZ. Someone’s even working on an auto retopology tool, since it is all triangles.

I agree that it would be great to see a GoZ for Blender :)

    10. Serendipitous !

The easy interface and control makes this feel like swimming… : )

…I wonder how the bump-painting works, if it might take the edge off of any rigging later on.

    11. Puzzled. The download links provided by Pixologic gives you a Sculptris Alpha 6. Anyone know when the final version will be published? And will it continue to be free?

    12. i dont think its gonna be free. why would they freely distribute a software thats almost as good as zbrush?

i think this is just a promotion to gather some email addresses of people who might be interested in a commercial version as well.

    13. Um – anyone have any issues on Mac? I’m tried to load several models and its crashed everyone time, except once when it created a geometric sculpture, which looked lovely- but was not the head model I had created.

    14. @stan

well… it is far away from zbrush capabilities. Zbrush have things like zshperes, retopo tools, great painting system, among others. In my opinion sculptries is just a small preview of zbrush capabilities, and I think with sculptries for free, they’ll get much more exposure to the world, and more chances to sell zbrush…

    15. “Navigational Controls

      ————–
In the Options menu you can change it back to “traditional Sculptris Navigation” which is similar to Maya etc..

    17. So what should I learn Zbrush or Sculptris? Sculptris isn’t easier and better right? I know its free but I was thinking of learning Zbrush but now what should I do.

    18. 128kb, this has been discussed before. I think your perspective of the purpose of blendernation is inaccurate. You should know that Blendernation frequently brings news of other apps, that is, if your not new to blendernation. Although I cannot speak for blendernation, I believe there view is if it’s worth there time to mention, they believe that some blender users will find it useful to implement into there production pipeline. (as you can see from the majority of post above).

Sculptris – The first time i used this tool I was floored. Absolutely amazing app for free. My current sculpting tool of choice, especially for quick mock-ups. It would be a pity if they start charging for this great app, but has been a concern since the creator went over to Zbrush. I’ve tried the sculpting tool in Blender, but find it a bit more difficult to get the same great results(probably a user issue ;). Plus the easy paint and bump map feature in Sculptris is excellent IMO.

Thanks for bringing news of an updated version!

    19. Fast and very easy to learn but, Sculptris files can become very large as you add more detail. You can’t put holes in objects without running into problems. I thought the paint and bump tools were limited. I don’t like triangles.
Pixologic bought it awhile ago but it doesn’t seem to have moved on very far from the original version.
It worked fine on linux using Wine.

    20. “I don’t like triangles”
There is no other way to make dynamic tesselation work but triangles.
And why does that matter to you?
You will have to remesh it anyway. And they are coding an auto quad remesh for it.

    21. I don’t like triangles because they often seemed to bend in odd ways, quadrangles feel more natural to me. It matters to me because it doesn’t seem neat.

By remesh do you mean retopologize, in which case what software would you recommend.

They are coding auto quad remesh because other people prefer quads to triangles.

    22. It looks like their download section doesn’t work. After submitting all the info it just shows empty window. No download links or something. I’ve tried in chrome, FF, opera – the results are the same. The only choise for me was to use the download links given above to download ;)

    23. I’m sad to see this excellent sculpting tool being acquired by Pixologic and not becoming integrated with Blender like many had hoped in the past, but better them than Autodesk, and in fairness who could honestly say they wouldn’t take the money?

Pixologic obviously understand the power of Sculptris, imagine how powerful/efficient ZBrush would become if you didn’t have to subdivide the whole mesh for a further level of detail (or has this already been implemented? , I don’t use ZBrush).

It may well become chargeable though it would be a far cheaper option than ZBrush and an excellent entry point for any small freelance artist or hobbyist like myself that is interested in sculpting with digital clay.

This is a much more robust version than the build I tried a long time ago, it feels much smoother to use, using a CUDA GC may also be a big factor on how smoother it runs.

@ iant “I don’t like triangles” I think a quad is actually 2 triangles underneath, its just displayed as a quad I’m sure that’s what I read somewhere before. You will never escape the tris :)

Excellent software and a round of applause for Thomas he has shown the industry big boys they don’t know everything!

And thank you Tim for posting this on BN I may have missed it otherwise :)

    24. can anyone confirm the ‘no restrictions on use’ ??? can we wire this up to blender? or take it apart in search of cannibal friendly features for blender? or is this use restricted? no mention on the website other than ‘free download’

    25. Sculptris is a great sculpting tool and it is a great step towards upgrading to zbrush which is a great software. What I like about Sculptris is that its mesh is completely supported in Blender so it can be a very good tool to complement blender’s workflow.

    26. @HumanBlade: The EULA is in the installationfolder. Sculptris may be free, but it’s still closed source propriety software. So taking it apart is out of the question. “No restrictions” probably means that you can use your creations in whatever way you like, including commercially/professionally.

    27. I own a copy of ZBrush, to be honest I have no idea why Pixologic bought Sculptris or why it’s even in beta at the moment. Not sure where their planning to take its direction but it does seem like most or some of Sculptris functions will start appearing in ZBrush. You can already feel a bit of it’s influence on ZBrush 4 I guess only time will tell.

Those comparing Blender to ZBrush take your rants to Autodesk, Pixologic isn’t like that. Yes it’s proprietary software you pay for, but once you buy it it’s free upgrades for life. Thus non comparative to the Autodesk market which require over 3k+ USD a year and is still plagued by bugs from previous versions.

BTW Scultptris is not a real program its beta crap atm, suffers from constant crashes and data loss. At this point in time serves no real active use or purpose. Those who have not spent enough time in ZBRush are not qualified to vouch on its behalf, it is a very different software compared to other programs out there.

      @ loopduplicate

No native support, but it does work under wine!

      @ Carlos Santos

If you are a hobbyist yes Blender is probably all that, but it will never topple paid software. You can argue semantics all you want, it just doesn’t make it a winner considering the fact Blender was originally used by the broadcast industry and failed so they open sourced it. I would rather vouch for Wings 3D, K-3D and MachStudio if we are to talk on basis of free.
