Blended Planet: Greenscreen Nightmare

14

David Weese has just released his (previously commercial) 'Greenscreen Nightmare' training video on YouTube.

David writes:

The Story Behind the Video

I was contacted by an After Effects user who had a greenscreen shot that was giving him fits - the Keylight Keyer in AE just wasn't giving him the results he wanted, and he was looking at Blender as a possible supplemental special effects production tool. He found my tutorials online and contacted me for some assistance...

Here's what the client had to say after I completed work on this shot :

“Approaching advanced compositing effects and color grading in Blender has never been more clear than with David Weese’s (Premier Media) ‘Greenscreen Nightmare’. His approach to this art [and science]is both intuitive and a joy to learn. After watching David’s video tutorial, I was able to pull a cleaner key than was possible with our traditional layer-based approach. Before watching this tutorial, node-based compositing remained an intimidating technique to learn, but not anymore. David is on our short-list for upcoming projects that require advanced compositing.”

The video is over an hour long and previously sold for $25.00. You can now find it on the BlendedPlanet YOUTUBE channel at:

Keep in mind this was done using pre-2.5 Blender but the vast majority still applies.

  1. Wow! Freakin' awesome! One of my future projects I'm hoping to do live action + blender ... this is going in my bookmarks for watching! BRILLIANT!

  2. I notice at 1:18 the green bleed over the shirt has not been removed. I thik there is a plug-in that does this ?

  3. I notice that at 1:18 the green bleed over the shirt has not been removed. I recall a plug-in or something that does this ?

  4. Awesome! I've been contemplating learning green screen techniques myself, but just imagine how adaptive cloning is going to revolutionize this process! GIMP is getting adaptive cloning via a Google Summer of Code student and you can follow his project here:

I am pretty sure he is going to limit himself with still images, but it shouldn't be too much harder after that to create a real time video adaptive cloning too, as seen in the video in this SIGGRAPH article:

    (or Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXvPeuc-wRw&feature=player_embedded)

    Cheers.

  5. I bought 'greenscreen nightmare' when it came out. Seriously skilled and informative stuff. Recommended.

  6. yeah, I'm so busy making films that I don't really have time to mess with commercial training videos anymore, but I do hope to do more blogging about hte production process and how we use Blender. This post is kind of an error, because the greenscreen walkthrough from "Out of Time" (the video clip above) and the greenscreen nightmare (2 videos) are actually two different things...

Thx all for the kind comments tho, glad it's helpful.

  7. Amcam : good eye! it's a good example of you don't kill yourself over something that won't matter. Once the reflection image was made transparent and blurred plus the overall color grading was pushed toward green (ala The Matrix) is helped hide flaws and I didn't have to work as hard on bleed. As I mentioned in this clip, many people who saw the film didn't even realize the lab was not real.

Maybe I will post when the film is available on DVD because people might be interested in a full length feature where Blender was used extensively for Special effects. i'm thinking there were at least 50 shots that utilized the virtual lab.

  8. I've been having a hard time viewing this, (dar n internet connection!) but the ten minutes or so I have been able to see seem to be very good, and very in-depth. Thank you to David Weese for making this available, and to cekuhnen for posting it!

  9. David, yes, I didn't notice the bleed in the final version but there's plenty of situations when it is very apparent. Instruction on how to remove it would be very useful.
