Graphicall.org 2.0

67

Everyones favourite site for the latest blender builds, Graphicall.org has received a major redesign. In addition to a visual overhaul, the site now features a new search function for builds, as well as improved navigation. Even more exciting is that the site will now be hosting builds not only for Blender but for other open source software including GIMP, Luxrender, and Yafaray.

Dolf Veenvliet writes:

I believe most of you are familiar with the www.graphicall.org website. For over 6 years now it's been a place for people to share their custom versions of Blender 3D with the entire community. It was started by Daniel Salazar (ZanQdo) and Pablo Vazquez (venomgfx) back before anyone knew what "pinkify" (see anything made by Pablo) meant.

A lot has happened since then... The community has grown by leaps and bounds. Three Blender Institute movies and a game were made. Blender's interface got completely rewritten... And the internet has evolved into a whole new creature with web 2.0, and social media. It was about time GraphicAll.org followed suit, and evolved.

We actually started development of the new system over a year ago. The folder Dolf Veenvliet (macouno) has been coding in says it was created March 20th 2010... so yeah... it took a while. But then, we didn't just upgrade the website, we wrote an entirely new system from scratch. Gone are the iframes, the tables. In are a whole heap of fresh new goodies.

Also... something new to the Blender community that needs mentioning is the "blenderhead id" login system. Thanks to Nathan Letwory (jesterKing) www.blenderstorm.org is now an open-id provider. This means, you can log in to multiple Blender community websites using a single account. Currently it's just GraphicAll.org and Blenderstorm.org, but more are on the way. So go register at Blenderstorm.org, if you haven't already!

It has been a pleasure to work on bringing you the new website, and we are rather proud of it. We hope you all stop by soon!

The GraphicAll.org monkeys.

  1. I mentioned Gimp needs something like graphicAll.org for a while now. Gimp is having lots of trouble currently, maybe this new GraphicAll.org feature helps them alot.

One of the best things in new Graphicall 2.0: now i can have a deepLink to my favourite Settings :-)

  3. Slow, cryptic, totally user un-friendly; a textbook example on how NOT to design a website. Well, from the command-line-is-good crowd we could not expect anything else.

GIMP has already enough problems; it does not need a similar site to ice the cake.

  5. @jpb06

there is nothing wrong with the site!
It is not slow. Possibly a little cryptic, but once you take 2 seconds to look at it it all makes sense.
and your just jealous you can't use the terminal!

  7. It's quite confusing, but I'll get used to it.

Only big problem is slowness... For me it takes 5-10 seconds to load a page so it's painful to check builds. And no, it's not my Internet. :)

  9. agree with MiikaH and jpb06, they need to make it more user friendly, it's too obscure and crowded.
they should keep the old design but add the new features...I am not against change, but this is a bit too much..

  11. I disagree with comments saying the new site being obscure, confusing, or cryptic. It's new, so some things have changed, but you get to it quite fast, and gives you several advantages the old site couldn't provide.
But yes, the old site was considerably faster. Maybe this needs some improvement.
    Maybe some Graphic overload?
Or cross-loading from code.blender.org slows things down?

Anyways, loading http://graphicall.org/windows/32bit is still faster than loading the old site, picking "Windows-Builds" from the dropdown boxes and submitting two forms to recive two iframes, where you still have to manually fiddle out your 32-bit versions.

  13. I guess I don't know what graphicall everyone is at, I personally think the site looks great and user friendly (and I'm browsing from a touchscreen cell phone, so I am probably missing out on a few features). The layout seems very standard (in a good way), there are bright, colorful buttons that feature eady to understand pictures (good for Blender's diverse user group, who obviously do not all read/speak the same language), and now hosts more than one open source graphics program (living up to the graphic-ALL name). All in all it seems to be a great new website that I hope to use for a long time.
Now if they would just host Wine builds... But I guess that has nothing to do with grapics. Still...

Hala ...

  15. Just quick-tested some Blender-sites by [strg][f5]:
    Blender.org (title-Page) loads fast
code.blender.org (Blender Developer blog) loads fast
graphicall.org/builds , the old GraphicAll site, loads fast
blendernation.com is slower, esp. if you measure until it finishes loading. But you get the first articles, the first full screen really fast.

Compared with these, the new graphicall.org takes ages to show the first glimpse of it's content.

  17. Thanks for the feedback, just reduced by half the total size at loading (both for the first time and reload).

We have a to-do list we're keeping track of bugs and feature requests we read around.

The idea is you don't have to browse around much now, search and thats it, you can always give a try while writing the url, instead of just typing graphicall.org, try "graphicall.org/windows/trunk/64bit" or so. Or just bookmark that to get always to the point in one load.

So please Shift+F5 and check how it loads for the first time, then F5, it should be faster now (main thing was checking for code.blender.org, was slowing down the connection before showing the actual page, will look into that!).

We're happy most of the people liked the new layout, basically is the same concept, just improved in areas we thought needed work, and if not, this is a much better foundation to work upon now, compared to the previous nineties' like system we had.

    Cheers

  19. for me it takes 2 seconds for a full refresh.. the hosting service we use was also experimenting serious problems yesterday. So.. relax, try again, keep the feedback and above all don't hate!

  21. And BTW the old graphicall wasn't prepared at all by the incredible amount of builds per day that we get (thanks builders! :) ) finding something was very hard. The new system is specially designed to deal with this vast variety and number of options

    cheers

  23. Some folks need to learn how to give constructive criticism without being complete jerks. It would reduce a lot more unnecessary human drama in this world. Information without sharp criticism and a bad attitude is not only possible, but necessary. But some here have given some constructive criticism to consider in a good manner.

Anyways, I personally found the website beneficial in its changes. I didn't have any problems getting around the site, and of course, ANY new changes to an interface takes a little time to adjust to using. The original website was in need of at least an internal upgrade to handle its much higher demand than it had 6 years ago. I'm not sure if a new interface was in demand, but it is a bit refreshing. I personally didn't find the interface cryptic--it was new, but I wouldn't call it cryptic. I've already adapted to it, esp. thanks to the mouse-over descriptions. And I find the icons used in identifying the nature of the builds to be quite useful, though at this time, one thing that seems to be missing is two icons for Mac builds, one for Intel-powered Mac and an one for PPC Mac builds. Though the interface is more graphical, it takes a page about one second to load for me.

I think even in the future should new changes or additions be done to the website, it will at least have this current work to be worked with easier. The site was just built, so naturally improvements to the speed will be made and any debugging needed will be done over time, though I personally didn't experience any slow loading times. I say, give it time. give your criticism in an appropriate manner, and be considerate to these developers who've developed on our behalf.

  25. Ama funcionality geliştirmek hedefleniyor değişiklikler anladım site graphicall.org şimdi çirkin. Çok çirkin.

  26. Excellent! So much faster and visually easier to see what's going on. The color-coding & icons is perfect. Love being able to save shortcuts directly to the builds that I use most often! Great work, guys!

  28. About being a jerk, I am a follower of the dont-fix-what-aint-broken philosophy and I passionately hate cuteness-for-cuteness-sake.

As decently clean example of a search application with category selections you might look at http://www.apertodomenica.com/. It is an italian site which tells you every day (especially important on Sundays) where and which shop/mall/etc is open (in Italy). You first select the Regione (imagine the state for you yanks), the Provincia (a smaller administrative subdivision, think a county) and keep refining the search critieria. At the end you submit the form and get the results. The visual side is not great but who cares? what matters is that the data this site provides are extremely accurate and it is of very fast search. Simple, fast, accurate and to the point; see what I mean?

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion of bookmarking URLs.

  30. Great rebuild, although the design is a little bit too busy for my tastes. I hope they are spreading the word to other communities (eg. Gimp), that there is a place to post development builds, otherwise it probably won't be used for the other software programs, but it is a great idea to include them.

  32. Really like it.

I especially like the dark background. The trend to darker backgrounds is something that I can really go with. The whole "lets use white because paper has always been white" paradigm is very tiring on the eyes with lots of blinding glare and is imho very old-fashioned and redundant in a digital medium.

Anyone else prefer reading white text on a dark background? The emphasis is on the words not the "paper" and the words stand out far better if they are bright and the background is dark.

I also like the different colour shades for the different builds. Even without the filters it's easy to differentiate between them.

I'm not too sure about the big white panel though...

Site loads really fast for me on a 1Mb ADSL connection. :) I've not tried it on my phone yet though.

Nice work on the redesign, and it's good to see a portal to builds from the whole open source world in one place.

  34. Well I have to say that I absolutely love the new site. The navigation suits me perfectly: what could be easier than clicking on those icons to filter the search? Being able to bookmark directly to my preferred settings is also a real plus.

Personally I found the site a bit ugly at first, but I think it is only because of the blue/white/black backgrounds, which is not consistent over the page and so it seems to lose continuity. For some reason I also find those triangular corner pictures (showing the OS) unattractive. If it was me, I would keep the blue for the News/Twitter bit at the top only and give the rest a white background. The corner pictures would look a lot better (as I think it is the clashing with the blue that is my problem with them) and the site would look more coherent. That said, fundamentally it is pretty, I think, with those nice icons making it very clear exactly what you are looking at - there has obviously been a lot of thought put into making it quick to understand what each build is - just needs an adjustment to the background colours to make it look cleaner.

I do wonder where all of the builds have gone. Are they still there, but reorganised/recategorised (is that a word?), or have some not been transferred over? For example, there used to be Freestyle builds under GSoC, but they seem to reside under Experimental now (which makes more sense nowadays, to be fair).

It is a nice touch that when there is only filter result (e.g. optimised Luxrender builds) you go straight to the download page.

Unfortunately I no longer seem to be able to download at work. It gets stuck on the "download" link and never starts on the actual build. Probably something to do with the firewalls, but obviously a bit of a shame for me personally, as it leaves me stuck with my slow home connection. That said, on my 30kb/s connection it takes <5 seconds to load/refresh any page, which is as fast as I could ask for, really.

So it's a big "thank you" from me for the update. It was clearly a lot of work and it has been well worth it in my opinion.

  35. Looks like the graphicall server is still setup to drop connections after a couple minutes. If that sounds like a long time, consider that much (maybe most) of the world uses slow mobile connections, not 3G, for Internet. In my location 20 KB/sec is all that's available. So I'll continue to build Blender from trunk when I want an update, though it would be nice to be able to try some of the more exotic builds on Graphicall.

Nothing wrong with a white background for the website.

  36. I'm not a fan of the changes. It seems much harder for new users to figure out whats going on. Yes search is great but only if you know exactly what you are looking for. For someone new to the scene I think it will be terribly confusing. How are they supposed to know what builds they want? I like simple and clean, I get enough bright colors and "eye candy" watching commercials.

Also it does not display correctly in IE. I know, I know, save it, no matter what you are going to say about IE it still has more users than any other browser. Regardless of if it is hard to code for you need to if you want to be accessible to everyone.

  37. I agree with jusposted. I like the new re-design, but I think the colors are a bit chunky and misplaced. Maybe it could also use some new CSS3 rounded corners and box shadows like the old site.

  38. i like the new design.
but i have problems to download the builde from the new sites!? is the server on an other location hosted?!
when i now download a file with my free download manager, it is not possible to continue aborted downloads and it is not possible to download a file in turbo mode (more than one connection at the same time on the same file)
the download from the old style sites was much faster - it was able to continue aborted downloads and it was possible to have multiple connections to download a file.

hopefully you can fix the download issues to have a good new design and the good download performance...

  39. @ jpb06

Me, too, man. I'm one of the strongest supporters of the don't-fix-what-ain't-broken philosophy and I also passionately hate cuteness-for-cuteness-sake. Thus my hatred for Microsoft (who constantly change things, esp. about their internal systems to MAKE developers relearn them again), and my recent sadness with Mozilla with Firefox 4. But I also wish a lot of folks in this world would just communicate better. You were a bit rude there. There is a way for anyone to communicate their concerns without such an inconsiderate manner.

Personally, as a programmer myself, I don't like to just bash someone else's hard work (UNLESS it's Microsoft, who I've just lost all respect for), but rather with a some care, communicate my concerns in a considerate manner. I think you gave some good concerns, but just could have been a little better about giving them.

The beautiful thing about open-source developers is if you bring your concerns to them nicely, often times they'll gladly consider your input. They want a successful result as much as you do. But there's nothing worse than having folks just rudely unload on you about something that's free for them but was time-costing to you. Even though I was speaking to more than one person, I apologize for calling you a jerk, esp. seeing how you as well as I do not like unnecessary change to what was working fine.

  40. Me again.
    "don’t-fix-what-ain’t-broken"?
    unecessary changes?
The functionality of the new Site is far beyond the old one. Go back to the caves if you like that better. They weren`t broken either. Houses simply were newer, and, in some circumstances, better suited, so no need to "fix" that.

Websites aren't used for their (graphic) design, but for their functionality/content. This way it's a logical and undoubtable clear step forward.
And after the changes of day one, its also pretty fast now.

Do I like the (graphic) design?
On the screenshot the design is more consistant than it really is now. Probably this is due to the fact you speeded it up after day one, as GraphicAll.org mentioned they "just reduced by half the total size at loading". This may be fixed again, so it looks more consistent again.

I`m not a friend of White text on Black background, and I know that's not really a question of taste. There are scientific investigations that at last in the long run dark text on light background is easier to read and less tedious. For eye-catchers it is Okay, but not for real Text.

For a site like GraphicAll.org i think it is Okay though, but I`m glad BlenderNation is Black-on-white, and the Blender Documentation Wiki (white on Black) thus is really horrific.

  41. beta-tester on

    hmmm...
the new site is currently not working well...
    frequently i run into a "server error" page from the "apache" web server of graphicall.org;
and downloads will not start or will stop and not able to continue...

  42. It seems the site doesn't use gzip compression and this might help save some kilobytes.
You can even serve web fonts compressed.

I have .htaccess files with magic words like this:

    # Compression using deflate
    AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml text/css

    SetOutputFilter DEFLATE

This is a nice site for getting optimization tips:
    http://websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/

  43. Animaticoide on

Site looks cool. However something that I consider terrible un-practical is querying the Database right after one Filter is selected. This generates more requests and more time wasted in the Client's machine. It badly needs a GO button, so we select all filters we want ( for example: windows--32---Optimized--Trunk ) and then hit GO, submitting the query and building the client's page.

  44. Maddes, I'm not sure those tests are entirely accurate, and are most likely biased.

If you operate a computer in a dark room most of the time, having just the screen lit up can hurt your eyes if the whole thing is super bright. Many 'hardcore' computer geeks do this, hence they want everything on-screen to be dark... With only what they need to pay attention to being light, such as text.

In a brightly lit office space, with computer monitors lit up at about the same amount as the light reflecting off a piece of paper on a desk, then I'm sure black on white is the most effective.

On paper in general, black on white is best. You never want white on black with printed materials, at least not for smaller text such as an article.

Overall, what matters is your target audience/medium. Is this a website, an ebook, or a printed article? It's a website. Websites are generally shown on a backlit computer screen. Who's going to go to the website? People who want to use the latest and greatest Blender. What sorts of people do that? Computer geeks. Sure there are exceptions, but based on this, it is likely that the majority of people who visit the site will be computer geeks who may prefer dark rooms.

Personally, I think they should have a theme changer, so people can choose what they want.

  45. Animaticoide on

    @ TYNACH

Why a theme changer? This is a site that you just come by to download the latest version of your software, it is not intended to spend the whole day looking at !
