It is very interesting to work with the subsurface on from the start. I started with youtube and ordered the DVD, looking forward to seeing the technique and settings in better definition. However. I've had my copy for several weeks and I LUV it! I give this DVD the *highest* marks. It's easily one of my top 3 Blender references and the price is a STEAL! I'm comfortable saying that, for character animation, this is the the best reference/training material you'll need to quickly learn how to produce a professional product using Blender.
