Blender Tattoos

21

blendernation_shoulderPaul Fitzpatrick uses Blender template files to generate interactive Flash content for websites. His latest experiment is a tattoo previewer.

You can now use Blender to preview tattoo designs online:

You can put text and images on the model surfaces, and rotate or scale it as you wish. The Flash 10 widget is created by converting a .blend (a simple cylinder overlaid on an image for the shoulder, and a full makehuman model for the back). The conversion process is discussed on BlenderArtists.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. They don't look better as you get older, in fact I can't think of anything worse than tattoos on aged, wrinkled, sagging skin. lol.

    Great use of Blender though!

  2. It could be fun to simulate the aging process with a makehuman model, so you can get an idea of what the tattoo you are getting now will look like in 70 years.

  3. That is just wicked... and I'm designing a tattoo for someone. I won't need this visualization, but once I am done with the design, I might as well make two proofs with this - afterall, he was debating doing it on the arm or the back. I think we're doing the arm right now...

  4. How can you be interested in art and not condone tattoos? Tattoos are a valid form of expression and style, and they can help indicate a persons passions visually wherever the wearer may go. Tattoos only look worse over time when they are not properly cared for. Just like a painting, Tattoos need upkeep and for a very reasonable price any decent Tattoo artist will clean up and recolor a persons Tattoos. I am not even in conflict with gang tattoos as they are easy enough to sight and avoid, It's even kinda handy for a law abiding person as myself to be able to read an individual from a distance and judge weather or not they are a person of dubious intent. I plan on getting tattoos to commemorate the essence of my life, and art. The point of any art is to express something about the artist or the client, I can't think of a better way that through tattoo, if it's not for you I can understand but to say you don't condone it, thats just ignorant.

  5. Why must people criticize others over something they don't agree with? Whether that's not condoning tattoos or not condoning their choice of design, really what does that matter? I will never understand why people care so much about something that doesn't effect them at all. Yes even the butterfly tattoos and nautical compasses that are overdone. I don't care if they messed up their skin in my opinion cause I don't have to live with it and I love/hate a lot of tattoos, but I will never have patience for closed minds. I think this is a great tool for people trying to make the right decision for them, in spite of a possible majority disapproval, including mine. Go personal choice, and down with personal feelings trying to limit life opportunities to those who seem more 'liberal' in their eyes. Learn to live with other people, and learn what that means.

  6. @Amar:

    How can you be interested in art and not condone tattoos?

    The same way you can be interested in art and not condone graffiti, or rap music, or video games. Everyone has something that they just don't like, however illogical or unfair that may be. Personally, I can't stand Disney Channel TV shows and movies. :)

    @Eric:
    I'm sorry, but you seem very closed-minded about closed-minded people. :p

    @discussion:
    Commenting on the topic... I'm not a fan of tattoos either, but the Blender logo or the Shotokan tiger would make good ones. The previewer is cool; I'll be sure to recommend it if a friend decides they really need a shoulder or back tattoo.

  7. even if one doesnt condone tattoos the website is useful,
    it can provide a visualization of rub on tattoos, bodypaintings or partial sunburn at the same time ..so anyway if u don't like having a tattoo u can enjoy the project:)..think of sending a photo postcard to a long lost friend or relative ...claiming to have gotten some awesome tattoo with their name on or some other hillarious purpose...just gotta make sure ppl. can't tell it isn't your arm or back on the picture,

    the title is a bit confusing seeing the pic i thought someone came up with a blender tatttoo on his arm....wouldn't be so bad either but its only rugged if it has the version number to it :P..or some beefy 'runs best on linux' patch

    having read thru this i find that I'm not the only one going by the name of Nixon ...i shoulda known :D

  8. @Gryphon: Yes I'm absolutely closed off to those who want to control someones person beliefs and decisions, without a care in the world of what it means to them, why should I listen to that? If you think I'm a hypocrite for wanting people to have the freedom to make their own decisions and ignore the haters at the same time then think again. How dare you say I need to keep an open mind to those who wont give so many others the same benefit, including me. Everything said is subject to it's context, which is why everyone is a hypocrite- to someone else...

  9. @Eric:
    #1: I'm very sorry to have upset you. Clearly my raspberry-flavored emoticon didn't have the desired effect. I wasn't flaming, I was joking. I apologize.

    #2: I'm not suggesting that anyone should blindly internalize and obey every closed-minded opinion they ever hear. That would be stupid. I was just pointing out (again, jokingly,) the irony in your very closed-minded stance against anybody who seems closed-minded. Which includes:

    #3: People, like me, who don't give a **** about "control[ling] someone's personal beliefs... without a care in the world of what it means to them..." I have very closed-minded positions on certain things. Everyone does. I don't need or want you or anyone else to open your mind to my closed-minded arguments about these subjects. (Which is why, for example, I haven't elaborated on my disdain for tattoos in general). Like I said, I just thought it was a little funny that you chose closed-mindedness to be closed-minded about. See the irony? No? Cool. I apologize again.

  10. @ccherrett:
    Um... Yeah? Dude seems upset, it seems to be my fault, as it was my joke. That's a yucky feeling. I just want to make us both feel better. Wouldn't you?

  11. @Gryphon: Hence my example of context. Anything taken out of context can be construed to be ironic in new light, the very nature of discussing opinions -vs- whats 'right' is a walking contradiction. Next time you feel the need to state the obvious, just keep it to yourself. Are you one of those that only complains about complainers? Is that irony or hypocrisy? Maybe it's ironic that you too are hypocritical. This could go on forever...
    At least we agree this is a useful tool for those who could use it. Keep up the great work Blender community!

  12. this is brilliant, I myself have lots of tattoos, and being an experienced 3D modeller aswell, this is 2 passions come together and Im really pleased about that, and now I can see what my back tattoo will look like before I have it done next month xD both my arms are a bit full now, but if you release a chest version i'll definately use that too as im thinking of having a tattoo over my heart that shows the skin torn away and just an empty area where my heart should be :)
    also im not going to answer back to any arguement this may cause, because just like I cant stand pop music and skinny jeans, its someone elses choice what they do with their bodies and there lives
