This Kajimba trailer is a compilation of the various project clips that they’ve already released and a few that I hadn’t seen before. It has a folksy feel to it and the animation, characters, textures are excellent as usual. I found it very funny as it plays well to my crude sense of humor. Hopefully they’ll get it funded and we can see a completed project in the near future.

      I hope this doesn’t get funding as it stands. The quality of the 3D work is irrelevant if there’s no story. And it’s rather sad if they think that just drinking, swearing, violence, vomiting, and farting is enough to make it funny.

      Great job on the animation, lighting and textures. Perhaps this studio can send this trailer to the blender Siggraph booth. It would really be good for the development of blender to be used on a weekly series. It would be great for workflow and the development of tools.

      @Jon and AniCator: and that’s why you dont get invited to parties, dinner or invited at all. Read the warnings and if you know deep down you’re too fragile dont watch it. saves us all (including you) alot of trouble!

      The first two dont really show of the show that well but that second skit (beer competition) was hilarious (and familiar once upon a time) and got Kajimba spot on! Thats the sort of skits that really fit the characters well!

      Loved the little rodent, beatifully animated!

      needed only a wee tone down on the violence factor and slapsticks, but not too much as I said that second skit was great! The best craks are those ones that dont hit you instantanously. I loved the vocals, not just because of the accents but because they were also well done!

      seriously funny… loved it!

      It has its plusses and minuses. I hope that this is still prototyping.

      Big plusses:
      - Voice acting
      - Lyp syncing
      - Facial animation due to talking
      - Atmosphere
      - Render quality
      - Sound editing
      - Camera direction
      - Character design. I never thought that a crocodile could be doable, but they did a very good job.
      - If this get traction it will really help Blender development because Broken (one the eye candy devs works there).
      - Fast Simpson-like/ Family guy – like humor
      - Good sense of weight in the characters.
      - Good timing

      Minusses:
      - It feels bland. I don’t see a dynamic between characters. No contrast. They all seem equally pissed off. Bland expressions (more attention to eye brows, eyes, asymmetric facial expressions). Bill (the comic relief gerbil) seems to be an exception to all this.
      - Too little texture in the animation
      - Too raunchy brow, but it could be a cultural thing. Maybe you guys are overshooting the target audience?
      - No strong poses
      - What’s the story? What’s the adventure? Is it like an adult version of the Koala Brothers?

      Modelling, texturing and animation are great, as well as the sound quality.

      I like a lot these funny videos, but unfortunately I’m not used to this accent, and so I haven’t understood one single word !o(

      So, the warning about rude language was useless for me !

      What are you driveling about? Try reading what people actually write. Did I, or AniCator say we were offended? No.

      You’re the one who wants the violence and slapstick toned down. I’m fine with violence, bad language and bodily functions. Just so long as they are part of a good story or actually funny.

      You must get invited to lame parties if you reckon drinking, swearing, violence, vomiting, and farting are all that’s needed for a good time. But as your name makes clear, you’re still a boy.

      That’s nice. Not great, awesome, or worthwhile; just nice. I DO hope they finish; just don’t shine your spotlights on the script; because as the saying goes, “Don’t shine a spotlight on a turd.”

      More importantly, FINISH WHAT YOU START, at least that way you have something to show for yourself. THAT is what looks good to production companies, not necessarily your script writing; they hire someone for that. Also it shows dedication and perseverance.

      So… all in all… GO KAJIMBA TEAM!

      well the cg stuff was all pretty good but I thought it’s crudity was ..well..embarassingly crass…but Australians kind of culturally identify with this stuff I suppose…
      I wouldnt think there would be much of a market for it as is outside Oz.
      Actually I thought it was going to be a kids series at one time?
      Lots of potential for sure but I think the tone/subject material needs a rethink.

      @jon : that you “hope it doesn’t get funded” shows your true self. Unprofessional, disrespectful and possibly small penised. With scabies covered in pus.

      @AniCator : This is a trailer, not Episode 1. I should have perhaps called it a Cutting Room Floor edit. None of these clips are in any episode and will probably appear in the opening or closing credits (yet to be determined). We’ve scripted 3 full episodes, all with buyers now. Good solid story per episode with inter connecting themes. And we’ve done the remaining treatments. Lots of background work that no one gets to see in a 2 min “snippets” trailer.

      @ Ian3d. Script? What script? OH! you mean episode 1…. you think you’re watching episode 1 hahahahaha you idiot! This is a Trailer, not episode 1, hahahahahahaha some people eh? Good for a laugh.

      @Toontje : Lots of these issues are related to budget at this point. Yes, we’re still funding it ourselves, and until we do get up, we’re exploring motion and textures organically. (ie : day by day around paid work). All your feedback is solid, thanks.

      @MaximB : Our feature-length version is deep in the works and is absolutely a possibility.

      @BigFan : Tone and subject material are aimed at our target market. Drinkers. Plenty of them around. Most don’t mind Aussies. Of course except New Zealanders.

      This is the best thing created with blender bar none, I would love to see a feature length. As far as there being no market outside Oz, that’s crazy, I’m in Ireland and anyone who enjoys family guy as well countless other shows containing adult humour would love this. I truly hope this gets picked up, faultless hilarious work.

      With texture in animation I meant the variation of poses. The richness of the movement and pauses. The textures (bitmap/ procedurals etc) are very good. The rusty car, the feathers all TOP NOTCH!

      Thank’s for the personal insult and quoting me out of context. You’re displaying an Australian stereotype… unobjective, undiscerning, and unable to accept criticism.

      If you think because I dared to criticise a specific aspect of the trailer (as have many others) that I’m being disrespectful and unprofessional then you’re woefully conceited.

      And if you think your self indulgent project is deserving of funding by public money just because it looks pretty then you need to get your head out of your arrogant arse and start thinking professionally. There’s nothing in the trailer that shows this project has any benefit to public good.

      The 3D work is very good. But why would you not want it to be good in every department. Just accept that the trailer’s script, story, humour and character depth and diversity can be improved and get it sorted. Then the product will be good enough not to need funding and will get bought or sponsored because of its creative and commercial merit.

      Surely you can do that out of respect to Blender if nothing else.

      I love Kajimba.

      I have seen other projects that looked very promising fizzle out, but I have a good feeling about this one. I think it will be a success.

      For me, the crude humor is great. On the other hand, I have always hoped that the Kajimba elves would go beyond crude humor, and add good stories. It sounds like good stories are on the way.

      I wish you the best of luck on this project. I’ll continue to watch your site and follow your RSS feed.

      We are all of different likes and tastes and since most BN readers are CG professionals and CG enthusiast they tend to look a the work shown here with a critical artistic eye more than the general public. Which is a good thing that which one can learn from to improve their art.

      I personally loved the trailer, it reminded me of some colorful characters that I’ve met throughout the years and I love slapstick humor, I grew up watching shows like the 3 stooges Dick Van Dyke etc.

      BN is about freedom of speech, all that we ask is to keep a civil and friendly tone in your comments.

      IMO the very good cg work just deserves better ‘content’.
      I am a little disappointed that it seems to have deteriorated into a Kevin Bloody Wilson along the way instead of having the confidence to be Aussie without ‘drinkers’.
      Still best of luck with it.
      I think most everyone has been complimentary about the cg stuff.

      How, exactly, is this project NOT self indulgent? You may care to check the term in a dictionary before answering.

      If there are clever, witty and charming scripts and original story lines waiting to be revealed then it seems rather daft to put the weakest stuff in the trailer and then get miffed when people find fault with it. Take a tip from Hollywood… put the best bits in the trailer.

      I’m not angry. Just bored by peoples immature and oversensitive reactions to valid criticisms. And when people make assumptions. And don’t read what others actually write. And state the obvious with vacuous comments like “there’s room for everyone’s opinion”.

      I never said I didn’t like the whole thing. Anyway, wether I like it or not is irrelevant. I’m just trying to be objective regardless of anyone’s personal opinion. The trailer’s script, humour and character depth and diversity are not of the same quality as the CGI. That is not an opinion IT IS AN OBJECTIVE TRUTH which is proven by the collective comments posted here. If it had been stated that the trailer was made up of cutting room floor clips then reactions would have been different.

      And saying this project is self indulgent is not an insult and shouldn’t be taken as such. It’s simply a fact, just the same way as mine and everyone else’s personal creative projects are self indulgent.

      When I create work for commercial purposes I accept that it will be subject to greater criticism and compromise. When one fully understands the huge differences between personal and commercial projects then life becomes clearer and the quality of work gets better. Well, in my experience at least.

But Jon’s opinion was made clear that he is thinking of this in the sense of public money funding. Jon’s opinion is IMHO valid to some extent. But yours is professional? No, it isn’t.

      The audience doesnt *have to* like the work even if you love what you did.
      The trailer is a tease not a bondage session.
      Because of the particular style I think you need to accept some of the audience are not going to like it including possibly those who may have the responsibility of writing the cheques for the full deal.
      I think the feedback here has been fair and honest and indicative of how it might be generally received.

      But having said that, you could be onto a winner. With an Australian beer brand sponsorship and some product placement you could effectively turn each episode in to a late night extended advert. Have you pitched it to any Aussie beer brands?

      Oh, and don’t forget to have one of the characters shit themselves. That’s always really funny.

      @ MartianR … Yes, that’s why the term ‘objective opinion’ is an oxymoron. But No, not everyone’s opinion is of equal value when evaluating commercial projects. Those with some degree of objectivity is of greater value. Those with some actual commercial experience is of even greater value. And those with the cheque book is of greatest value.

      The subject of objectivity is a actually really interesting. I agree that people in positions of influence, by virtue of spending power or valued experience, make affecting decisions, but are they not based upon the notion of an educated opinion ? The best anyone can do in this life is make the best decision they can, based on the information to hand, and personal experience to interpret that information to give the best chance of a predictable outcome. CEO’s, for instance, do this all the time, mostly getting it right, but sometimes getting wrong. In my many years, I’ve come across a number of people who have a degree of influence, conscience, or experience, but I’ve never met a single, truly objective person. Even a pretty balanced and diligent district judge will depend heavily on their personal experience, and a combination of their conscience (if they have one) and evolving laws based on precedence, rather than pure objectivity.

      It would be a boring world indeed if objectivity actually existed. At least, that’s what think.

      What people are hung up about is what you said earlier about you hoping they fail miserably. In this market the profit margins are tight, the appreciation sparse, the work HARD, maybe them guys has been burning the midnight oil once or twice on this one. They funded this project themselves. Their work will help Blender tremendously. Its what the community always been hoping for: a professional studio making high end animation using Blender.

      I suggest you do 2 things:
      1. Take a chill pill
      2. Eat some humble pie.

      hahaha! I’m not able to make sense of what they are talking about. Animation is very good and love the character designs.

      I hope I would not be submitted to heat talks with this but I kind of does not make a story or something from the trailer. Trailers I have seen so far introduce you to the story or the character(s). Wall-e make trailers about the character wall-e doing humorous stuff, it makes me want to see him more. The titanic trailer surely tells me that it would be a love story and even gives us previews of what the lovers and the villains are like. And the Transformers trailers are a bang, clearly made for those special effects junkies but still giving us insights of what the story is like.

      To me this trailer is a haphazard unrelated collection of various shorts I seen in the site and others I have not seen yet. It is unfocused and quite meaningless.

      I would like to see another trailer with its various parts and elements focused on something relevant to the movie they will be making. Maybe a summary of the story, or a focus on a character (I especially like Grogan and Bill, request?), or maybe about the place (Kajimba?) where the story is happening. That would present a much more coherent expression and even if we don’t understand what they are talking, we still get the picture.

      Just to clarify a point- Jon seems to think that Kajimba is asking for ‘public’ funding, whereas that’s not my personal impression, it seems that instead it’s looking for commercial backers. As such, they probably make content like this as preview/proof of concept material (investors are very unlikely to spend on something that they can’t predict the look/capability of) and the story for the episodes is kept non-public for now, but part of the pitch- or at least that makes sense.
      As such, it is not too sensible to poke story / script criticisms at this stage, when the trailer is really a bunch of animation tests strung together… At most you can get the basic setup (it’s a bunch of hard-drinking Australian animals in a bar, with crude humor and a bit of slapstick). The intent is to make a show, so any story there is likely to be episodic, beyond a potential initial ‘setup’.

      Also, I don’t think it’s fair to compare a ‘seeking funding stage’ trailer made out of test footage to a theatrical trailer for something like Wall-E or Transformers, that is made towards the end of the production. I’m fairly sure that this isn’t the last trailer we see out of the Kajimba crew.

      Now that that’s muddied up…
      Cooooooooooollllll! looks bloody awesome mate! My favorite aspects are the lighting and materials work, the characters are solid, and the animation is par. I hope you guys *do* get the funding you need to get this show made.

      …and I stick by it. Tim Formica’s opening post referred to the project being ‘funded’ and with that in mind I based my comment only on the content of the ‘trailer’ above. Judging by that alone the project is not deserving of public funds. If it is offered commercial backing or sponsorship then that’s great for everyone. But it will more likely get that commercial backing with a trailer that shows a greater diversity of content and hints at story lines with depth and variety.

      My comment was constructive criticism. And if people can’t see that then they should consider having the chip on their shoulder surgically removed.

      Here’s a possible storyline for one of the episodes or maybe a feature length film version…

      A parody of the backpacker horror film Wolf Creek but call it Dingo Creek or Shit Creek and have the bushman Mick bad guy character as a dingo who lives in a disused quarry or uranium mine. The 3 British backpackers could be…

      Dave or Paul – Bulldog or Pig – cockney Arsenal soccer fan

      Tanya or Tracy – Red Squirrel or Fox or Rabbit – sexy/slutty Essex girl

      Jemima or Jessica or Geraldine – Duck or Hedgehog – posh public school girl or west country farm girl

      One of the backpackers could stagger into the Kajimba hotel looking for help to rescue their 2 friends or all 3 could turn up asking for directions to somewhere or in need of someone to repair their vehicle.

      The story could suggest that Mick Dingo is a homicidal maniac but in the end he’s just a bit mad from uranium poisoning and the backpackers kill themselves through their own stupidity in various amusingly horrific ways.

      It could be a good storyline for some seriously edgy adult humour and a good opportunity for taking the piss out of the British which I know is a popular Aussie pastime.

      If you want to use the idea then you can buy me a beer. Just don’t make it one of those fizzy piss Aussie beers.

      Your aim was for the trailer to attract commercial finance and in that respect it’s still lame because financial backers want to see product as near to its finished potential as possible. Did the trailer get you a deal at Annecy 09 ?

      Anyway, do you think you might make use of my Shit Creek concept? I’ve got a few scene ideas if you’re interested. I’ve tried posting on the Kajimba blog but the comment system has got a screw loose.

      And BTW, the Kajimba logotype is shit.

      to Bassam: Then don’t call it a trailer then. That basically makes the mess here. Trailers are show or movie previews for feature films. So it has to have the characteristics and qualities of trailers.

      Of course it is sensible to poke for the story. Movies are essentially a story telling device. When there is no story there is no movie, period. You are better off watching the stars above or firecrackers if you want something beautiful to look at.

      Of course it is valid to compare it to theatrical trailers. Though they maybe made in the end of the production, the plans for them are done along the production and maybe before production. Those trailers are meant for the end consumers which are the most important consideration. After all, why would someone fund a movie that the no one would care to watch (and buy). That would be like wasting money. So if you think that the end buyers does not matter at this stage, think again. They are the heart in this kind of industries. Making a movie without considering them is doomed to failure.

      Your are correct in stating that the animation is great. Lighting, textures, composition is magnificent. But then don’t look only at the technical aspects. This is a movie, which as I just mentioned is story telling. The movie has to have a story to tell.

      To Jon: I agree with you but I would use a much more conservative statements. It is good to point out what really matters. It is like the case of Titanic. The unessential stuff speaks of indulgence… gold, oak, crystal, velvet, etc. but they are all build on top of boat made of very poor, brittle steel, and bellow standard rivets. No wonder it sink in its maiden voyage.

      Though the technical aspects are great, they are nothing if they had no good foundation to stand on.

      To the Kajimba Agency: Please, I greatly admire your work as a 3d artist. These excellent stuff requires a lot of sweat and tears on your own part. I would like you to succeed very much. It would be heart breaking if this fails. I take my time to post here hoping that it would help you succeed.

      The “exact point” of our release of all the Kajimba clips and mis-titled “trailer” is to reveal the realm of Kajimba organically. To build our own ideas as we work and to inspire ourselves (and possibly others) with newer and better ideas for characters and scenarios.

      Whether that definition of inspiration includes idiot amateur submissions of treatments is entirely mute.

      Oh and entirely against the direction of your verbal shit spout, you and your rubber head somehow managed to unconsciously absorb some of the thread of Kajimba, since your shit creek treatment is actually along that very vein.

      In simpleton terms, you came up with that treatment that could fit, purely from exposure to our work on Kajimba.

      And that IS the point, cock.

      BTW. I can safely assume you have no idea about animation markets. You don’t close deals at market. You introduce your work to representatives who answer to development committees. Who need to see it and digest. Oh.. and that thing called relationship building, the face to face stuff, not the forum blathering I’m wasting my time on with you.

      …which exposes compliments I’m happy to give. The Kajimba concept is solid. It has mileage. And people will easily ‘get it’. But maybe too easily, so make sure you keep surprising them and pushing the boundaries.

      To Jon: Please, stop this. Such manners only induce more hatred. Please be more open. Consider what would Noelene and other people of Kajimba feel when they read it. Noelene and others will see and accept your comments much better if stated more respectfully and positively. I believe you are a blender artist too and it hurts to see two blender artist fighting each other over a thing they both could have loved.

      Don’t make me crawl back out of my bog. I could rip your well meaning comment to shreds, but it’s so densely packed with misunderstanding and contradiction that I can’t afford the time to address every issue it raises.

      But consider this…
      Criticism and argument are agents for good. I engaged in them only for the sake of creative improvement. I’m not aware of any hatred, negativity, fighting or lack of respect here. I can’t speak for Noelene, but I’ve enjoyed our exchange of words. To engage with someone so bluntly and amusingly is a pleasure.

      to Jon: Yeah. Others seems to misunderstand or exaggerate your statements. No wonder your angry. The “no funding stuff” really makes other rattle at you. Other thinks you hate it or wish them to fail or something similar.

      I rather agree at your statement in this sense:

      At the same time:

      And

      Others does not like how you state it though and goes ranting hate speech at you. It only escalates when you retaliate in the same manner. I hope they understand that you meant it in a good way and… forgive them too.

      Great graphics and not quite as crass as I had feared after reading through this thread. I also offer my sincerest hopes that Kajimba succeeds.

      I must admit I’m not a fan of crass humor (slapstick is usually all right) but I can tolerate it if I think the rest of the show is worth watching. I don’t know if this is worth watching yet as Kajimba is still in development, but I am intrigued enough to give it another look should the subject pop up again. I am also assuming that future trailers will be forthcoming and will more directly tackle the issue of “this is why you want to watch!”

      For you non-taxonomists, Bill is not a rodent. He is a bilby, which is a marsupial. And I’ve probably already bored you enough just saying that. (An Easter bilby subplot might be interesting in one episode.)

      It’s hard to take constructive criticism seriously when it’s veiled with seeming insults and apparent attacks. A little courtesy can help make readers more likely to listen. At the very least, it’ll make your crankier opponents look silly should the mood turn sour.
