Hi, I've recently completed a new music video for some local rappers I know. I did all the animation in Blender, even though it's 2D (or 2.5D). Thought you might like to check it out!

I certainly do :) Very nice and professional work, thanks for sharing!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Really Impressive, I really like the mix of 2d-3d, and the smooth movements of the characters, maybe we can see some tutorial or some tricks revealed?

  2. Brilliant - kept watching. And good rip of Red Hot riff >_o - I hope this video gets more exposure !

You should btw, let us see some wires/setups of how you did it :)

  3. rad.
you coould probably get a show like this on adult swim, or something, because it is unique.
also, tuts of some kind please.

  4. This is very very well done. Everything fits so good together and this reminds of the time when MTV Europe meant something. The Fat Club must really be proud on how this turned out. Nice direction, nice camera direction.

  5. This was very impressive. And this, in the comments above:

"you could probably get a show like this on adult swim"

Truth. Set up a concept, a few interesting characters- get any writer friends in on it if you have any- and go make some money. I would love to see this style as a cartoon, particularly if you continued to use Blender.

I don't even *like* rap, and thought the whole thing was excellent.

  6. The fast cuts kept it interesting the whole way through.

Some of the characters and lyrics were a little grotesque, but it's probably suited for the intended audience so I can't crit you on that, just my personal opinion.

    Keep up the excellent style!

  7. Haha nice

Very interesting style, fitted the song nicely. Superb camera work and timing.

Gotta love the unique animations that keep popping up these days.

  8. Most Fnexcellent
    Truly Atlantic Animation
I hope you are put in charge cos this is uberwow
If you tell us how to do it we will win.
Everthing about this is good - everything

  9. Thanks for all the lovely comments!

Of course, in the spirit of Blender, I’m happy to do a tutorial! But what should I do? Where should I write one? Do I do a DVD as suggested? I’ve done a few projects like this now so have learned a few tricks.

I have some production shots here: http://www.albinal.com/fatclub/

…and one of my new year's resolutions is to start a blog:
    http://humungoushumdinger.blogspot.com/

There’s nothing on it now but you're welcome to start following… I will start posting in January.

The adult swim thing is great idea, I’ll have to look into it. http://www.4mations.tv/ is another place to upload quirky stuff… though when I uploaded this they chopped it in half?!?

I have some ideas for funny little shorts but I just need some time… I did this over the course of a year in my spare time, so it’s not exactly rapid development! Does anyone want to pay me so I don’t have to go to work? ;-)

  10. the production gallery is interesting.

i would be most interested in how you set up things like the different head pngs or the different mouth pngs. i have no clue how this changing of images could be animated without much effort.

  11. This is great well done! and thankyou for sharing this with the community. Most animation on TV is 2d, it is still a popular format and I think it is great that blender is being used to produce 2d style toons. Can anybody post any sites with 2d blender tutorials?

  12. Pretty cool, and I loved the animation techs, but you might warn about the profanity and the like.. I know some kids read this site.

  13. horace: There's no such thing as "animated without much effort" ;-)

For switching heads I use animated layers. For the mouths I used image sequences (which I did in flash) and then added them as textures to the planes. I will try to write a proper tutorial with some video and try and get it on here when it's done.

yogyog: I don't know what they all do for a living but I just made these up as I went along. The first two guys are Fat Club but the track features many other artists from the local area.

Kory: Sorry for the bad language... It's a bit too late now but lesson learned... kids beware! :-/

  14. Elye: Amazing work! It's very professional and it hasn't weak points. I loved it.
Just a question? Why did you use flash for the lip synchro part? I guess the blender sequencer using audio(ram) and the same png would be almost the same. Well, not the same. Flash has a better assets management and dragging and dropping symbols into the timeline is faster than importing the images or duplicating them. Was that the reason?
