Farsthary + Matt Ebb = Volumetrics Goodness

12

We talked about Farsthary's volumetrics work before. He has now teamed up with Matt Ebb (of Elephants Dream and more recently ProMotion studios fame).

Matt writes:

Raúl completed a fair bit already, implementing this in Blender. Living in Cuba, where he doesn't enjoy the same kind of connectivity as in many other parts of the world, it's been difficult for him to participate in development and share his work. A few weeks ago, he emailed me asking for help with his code, and with maintaining it publicly.

Matt goes on to describe the challenge in more detail and presents an impressive todo list on his blog.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Anything that speeds this up in a stable and comprehensive fashion, then of course getting it into the next official release, seems like a GREAT THING!!!!

  2. To think he managed to do this on his own, and while rebuilding in the aftermath of huge storms.

This show dedication to Blender and a true will to share with the community.
I just wish I didn't code like a retarded monkey, at least I would be helpful... :(

  3. @ Martin:
go to BlenderArtists, in the general support forum and you'll get help quickly. Blender imports many formats. Look under File > Import... (see Blender isn't completely foreign after all :) )

For the rest, I can only repeat myself :

It is great that Farsthary has the chance to learn with Matt. It is very generous of him to team up with Farsthary who will bring to the table his will and dedication, of which he is not short in supply. I am sure that he will become a superb developer.

Thanks to the both of you.

    Jean

*lol* thank you for the hint! I suppose my question was not specific enough: what I meant: is there already a desription how I can import my 3d-volume data to blender so that I can use it with volume textures? The only tutorial that I found explained how to use blenders internal procedure to create 3d-data. Anyway, I posted already a thread at blenderartists about that.

  5. seemingly unable to comment to the next post. oh well.

about it: enjoyed the music, some nice light/blue effects, etc., but overall lacking some umph. ;)
