I've had to do it that way on my Mac as well, but if you're using Windows, I believe the installer does what you want. I don't know about Linux... probably apt-get will preserve your settings and whatnot. That's assuming 2.47 is even in the repositories yet...</description>

Im not sure that you can get it to 'upgrade', but usually i leave the past versions of Blender on my computer. They dont take up much space, and you might need to go back to a previous version sometime for any number of reasons. But, when a new version of blender is installed, it becomes the default version for opening .blend files.</description>
