Tree modeling and setup tutorial
Yorik sent us a tutorial recently on the process he went through creating trees, using nGPlant, for eventual rendering in Blender. And he even has a number of tree models ready and available for download in the .blend file format for use in Blender. Find them here.
The tutorial goes into discussing visually how tree’s appear in nature and the laws that can be used to guarantee you create as accurate a model as possible. And the tutorial even goes into the process involved with painting a leaf texture. A good read and its nice to see various Open Source applications working together in a project.

Sweet, and the idea of building a library is equally sweet. Please, if you are going to do the tut, check first what’s already made and make trees that are not there yet.

Yorik,Thanks again for another great tutorial. Your tutorials are always very clear and easy to understand. I especially like the section on theory. I never quite thought about plants in terms of mathematics but you are absolutely right! I always loved to paint plants from figuring out their qualities. This new information will help with both Blending and painting.

I miss the tropics and the beautiful plants found there.
I’m sure you have seen the film “Pi” by Darren Aronofsky. I didn’t take its theory part as serious as I do now after your tutorial. The golden ratio. Wow!
After 2 years of 3D modelling I did not yet get that good at modelling but the whole processs about learning it has taught me one thing: open your eyes, lean back and think about what you see!

I’ve always thought there was a hole in blender productions: That no one ever made any realistic vegetation.
But I guess that hole is closing up now.
Now if someone can produce realistic looking animals…

Nice tutorial. I also really liked the first introduction to the theory. It’s good to see that there are people who not only write a tutorial but also take some time to teach some fundamentals.
I don’t see myself using this in the near future for a project or something like that, but i think i’m going to try to dabble with this software real soon.

Does anyone know what is going on with the Peach treegen script? I really want to try it out, but i can’t find it anywhere…
You should be able to find the treegen script in one of the graphicall.org builds, I think that script has been included nearly since it was announced. It’s under the Script > Wizards menu, “Trees from Curves” I believe.
Really well put together tutorial, btw… from theory to conclusion. :)
Andrew, you mentioned realistic animals, have you seen the work of Renderdemon at http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?p=1119053 ? Can you imagine running into this tiger in one of Yorik’s jungles?
