Two italian commercials
An Italian artist known as “e.perinelli” wanted to change his workflow to using open source tools.
One day he got the chance of doing 2 simple 10 seconds TV spots for an Italian shoes company, and though it was a good idea to test this workflow on a production environment.
Being his first commercial work using Blender, he wanted to share a bit of the experience with us:
everything has been rendered in separate layers (at double res
since the zooming is post production); Simone Versitano took care of
compositing, editing, color correcting, adding particles and audio in
Adobe After Effectswhat went right:
– blender is FAST
– the rendering layers are quite easy to setup and it’s an ideal
workflow for post production fine-tuningwhat went wrong: ( remember i’m a newbie :-D )
– setting up an animation is a bit confusing, i’d like to be able to
have RT feedback when i edit IPO curves
– color correcting the hearts brought to a bit of banding in the
colour gradient (that nobody noticed except me), probably i have to
use some kind of dithering for the 24bit output or experimenting with
openEXR and higher color spaces

Upon close scrutiny, it looks like this was pretty simple to set up. Quite impressive; it’s very professional.
@Eugenio Perinelli: What software did you use before Blender? Have you done many other commercials, or mostly just architectural visualization? What do you like better about Blender so far? Where else do you think it still needs work?

Any use of blender in the commercial field is good news.

yes, it’s quite simple to set up. I’m happy it looks professional, since that’s what i’m supposed to be :-D
in chronological order i’ve used throught the years:
Impulse’s Imagine (from 2.0)
Alias Poweranimator (from 8.5)
Newtek’s Lightwave
Alias|wavefront Maya (from 1.0)
I’ve done architectural, design visualization, TV and videogames
As i’ve already written, the only thing i find a bit confusing is with setting up the animations, i would like to be able to edit IPOs for more than one object at a time and have RT feedback of the modifications
Blender’s modeler is very powerful, rendering is lightning fast, and now i’m taking a step forward with the use of OpenEXR format: the quality of the image is much better but i’m not able to do Z Compositing in After Effects yet (and this is really bad).
Maybe we should consider other compositing solutions (Shake? Combustion? no idea yet)

there is a python script to export blender camera motion to import into aftereffects.
with rendering selectively into layers, its working great to finish it in post using AE.
you can set ipo curve editing to dynamically affect the other views; it’s a little icon you have to click on the header (I know it’s a bit hidden) that looks like a lock.
anyway, minor thing.

Our main problem with After Effects is with Z Compositing, anyway
We can’t composite layer using their ZBuffer value.

For editing more than one object at a time ipo’s you can pin sevral ipo’s editors for the non-selected objects …
