The same applies to some others too with varying degree, things have just changed so much lately that the docs can't keep up. Atleast the docs written by olivS under "blender.org current changes since 2.44" should be up to date and were checked and approved by me. In one of the links, they already say that it's not backward compatible you'll need to tweak old systems (which roughly but not exactly get converted) but you wont be able to use it in older versions.
