Bassam, thanks for the information about the Blender educational group. I have just subscribed, and hope it continues to develop. Cesar and Aussidude, I, like you, was hoping for a class nearby a few years ago. There of course were none close enough for me to attend, and so about a year ago I started one in a local coffee house with internet access. I was still hoping that I could teach a little, and then others would learn Blender and teach me. By that beginning teaching, I learned more and more because I wanted to be prepared for the following week's class and also to answer questions that came up. The people who came to those early classes were very enthusiastic and really helped me to learn not only Blender, but how to teach it better. This may be something that you may want to try where you are. Even giving a demonstration of what you are doing may get a group interested in continuing as a study group. Each person helping the others to learn.
Good luck!

Everyone, thanks for the comments. I am very excited about this project. Jim C your book has been a great inspiration for me and I always recommend it to people learning Blender. basse, Yeah I got a kick out of that picture too. I don't know where it came from. Unfortunatly Doris Day will be unavailable the days of the class so the students will have to look at me instead. Bart, thanks for letting everyone know about the class. I am hoping we can get even more people using Blender and aware of its wonderful set of capabilities. I thank you especially for all the wonderful tutorials that you have posted links to that have helped me learn Blender. What a wonderful group of people.

Great news for me, I live only 20min from Kingsport.
And it looks like I have time. I was waiting for an opportunity like this to happen in my area since a long time. Books and online tutorials are a good source, but self study has it's limits.

Hi to Aussiedude, JimC and any others doing/ interested in blender education work/development. If you are interested in this topic (classes, curriculums, certification, etc.) you could try going to blender.org, click on the "get involved" link on the side, which gets you to http://www.blender.org/community/get-involved/ - this page has a section for Education and Training, which lets you get on the bf education mailing list- I think this is a good place to communicate ideas on, to prevent duplication of ideas, and more importantly, to organize and work on implementing these and other ideas. Check it out- there are already cool and interesting ideas (and people) working on these lines.
If you are on the mailinglist already, forgive me, but perhaps this post will alert other people to its existence.
cheers

Thanks JimC! Maybe a 'Global Teach Blender' could be held and advertised on Blendernation, all Blender User's go out and teach 1 person (or more) how to use Blender. I think that if more people *understood* blender then a lot more would use it. I also think that Blender should be advertised to schools, so students learn to use Blender in school and continue to use it in the IT industry...

...but maybe I'm getting a bit ahead of myself. :)

I can get some of my class mates together and ask my teacher if he'll help me hold Blender lessons in the Holidays at school, do the same thing this guy did and charge something like $30 to cover the expense of using the schools computer lab. My school has been looking for ways to earn money off the new $350,000+ computer lab they got, maybe they'll like idea... the computer lab also has the perfect setup for it...
.... 34 computers with 2GB of RAM, 250GB HDD, Dual Core 3.2GHz Pentium 4 Processors
... I've often dreamed of using the lab as a renderfarm....*drools*.

I should see my IT teacher and my mates about this, see if I can get enough interest in it from them and move from there.

Hey Aussiedude

Try out my link (click on my name). This will take you to my site with a link to my Blender book on my school website. It's organized in short 2-3 page chapters which can be covered in a typical 45 minute class period (with activities at the end of the chapters). Sorry, right now I don;t have step-by-step teacher notes, but this could work for you.

I ran some workshops this summer for teachers and they went very well.

.... maybe .... IDEA!!!!!! (no wait thats just gas... NO, WAIT, IT IS AN IDEA!)

Just had a brain wave! I'm sure that like me there is many people around the world with the opportunity and willingness to teach blender to users. But which also like me just simply don't know enough about blender (or teaching) to do so...

...Maybe a project could be created to design a standardised course for teaching blender. It could contain instructions about what to do each lesson, what to teach and how, tips for teaching Blender, etc...

It could be made in a wiki site and then turned into a free downloadable ebook. Then problem solved!

Then people all round the world could easily teach blender to the masses. HURRAY!

... well I think it would be a good idea... what do you all think?
