Smoothing TutorialMost Blender users already had some kind of smoothing problems. With these users in mind, Olivier from Feeblemind has published a tutorial, teaching how to solve smoothing problems. The tutorial is very instructive and a must read for new users. Some of the subjects of the tutorial: Normals, Double faces, Set Smooth, Set Solid, Auto Smooth and the Edge Split Modifier.

Olivier says:

I wrote a tutorial intended for beginners, explaining the basis of smoothing
in Blender, and how to avoid the most common pitfalls that are the inverted
normals and the doubles.

  1. Great tutorial. I always forget the CTRL-E shortcut,and I have to search it in the documentation each time I neeed it!

  2. Hah... right... I understand the edge split thing now! that's great... I had no idea it did that, and I wanted something like it rather badly ;)

  3. You can also make sharp edges with one smoothing group by separating faces and only rejoining those that would not make the seam.

  5. This is great. I remember this used to frustrate me when I was new to Blender and took me forever to figure out -I wish this tutorial were around when I was a n00b. And it's very thorough -Great job

    Is the part about "set smooth" doing angles >= 90 still relevant (2.46)? I always get sharp edges there, and was scouring the web for a loophole.
