screenshot039.jpgI was looking through the SIGGRAPH Animation Festival schedule and discovered that Nils Thuery's Magic Fluid Controls Animation starring Mancandy is on the list. Nice to see a Blender animation at SIGGRAPH. You'll find it listed about two thirds of the way down on the site.

Nils' animations and papers

I'm just wondering why Elephant's Dream wasn't on the list too?

I remember seeing his work a while back. Are we ever going to see these fluid controls in blender?

he makes a great work with his fluid simulator.
when could we see this "fluid control" in blender?

Good to see other nils' doing good work. And don't forget plural nils' the apotrophe is after the s
    ;)

Congratulations, Nils! I thoroughly enjoyed the Animation Festival last year and it's great that a Blender animation was selected.

The work is great and I'm also glad to see some Blender work in the animation festival. I'm just trying to get my schedule figured out so I can go to siggraph again this year!

    ´These Vids where impressive!
I'd like to see a whole film with such effects B)

    Good work Nils :D

    and @ other Nils:
Not quite an easy case, lol
If the ' would be placed like "Nil's", the name wouldn't be Nils, but Nil…

To other Nils, oops. fixed it.

Nice work, good to see blender being used as the base of operations for demonstrating these complex calculations that would give many non-open source CG apps a run for their money. Maya 8.5 cloth was apparently bashed together in 30mins (initially) and it's hellish to use! lol.

Answer: What does a vacuum cleaner and Elephant Dream have in common?

Anyway, I hope that Nils's work attracts attention. It would be deservingly good for him and good for Blender's exposure.

We can only hope that this will find its way in the source code too someday (I remembered Nils writing something like the code is practically already…)

Last year the Open Source Pavilion booth at Siggraph 2006 featured Elephant's Dream. I guess they didn't want to keep beating the same horse.

I love His first video on his website. It's so random!

It's not Mancandy staring, but him starring.

    Cool!

Actually, he is pretty much staring and not really looking… I guess people are to busy looking at the tech specs and not the emotions of this movie. That is probably also why elephants dream was not selected last year. Not enough technical innovation for a techy entrance, and not entertaining enough for the theater. There is no art category at the Special Interest Group on Graphics.

I think Elephants Dream has been hyped enough already. I'm looking forward to Plumiferos and potentially another Orange Project.

Wow, went to his website and if this guy isn't coding the fluid sims in Blender - he should be. He has a bunch of technical papers on the subject! (And, as this animation shows, is a master)

    ERM:
If I remember right, this guy is responsible for the current fluid simulator in blender (a GSOC project a few years ago). And if memory serves me right, he has continued to maintain the fluid simulator since.

Blender is a perfect vessel to carry you research on, and I think Nils knows this. I believe he will continue develop the fluid for Blender time permitting.
I think other researchers should follow suit and give Blender a try. Blender as a kick ass OSS platform is ideal to test a research in tandem with all feature of that software package.

    @toontje:
nils' code exists already although I'm not sure if it is actually compiled into blender - I think I heard somewhere that it's only really the UI that is lacking since nils used blender to make those technical movies anyway but you'd have to ask him yourself probably lol.

just a test - sorry bart - I really don't trust you do I! - was reading about type 2 XSS on wikipedia lol…
