Fresh Blender News, Every Day
Although you never know with Open Source software ("it'll be ready when it's ready"), it looks like the release of 2.44 is near. For now, all we can report on is that the new 2.44 splash screen has been committed to CVS (or rather to SVN, as the developers are in the middle of a switch to the new version management system). The new splash is designed by @ndy, who seems to have a thing for gecko's ;-)

Thanks Andy!!! Excellent job. :)
I absolutely love this image! As I was glancing through the list of Entries, I was hoping this one would win!
I can't wait to seeing this gecko every time I open Blender!
Congratulations @ndy!
Cuby

Looks good. Thats the good thing about new releases. Always get to see a different start up ;D
lovable little reptile!
It seems like the development of Blender keeps going faster and faster.
great news and great pics (both the spash screen and the guy)
Nice entry and looks great. not my personal 1st choice but well worthy nonetheless.
most excelent!
Congrats, @ndy, that's a cute little fellow. :)
Pretty cool! B)
can't wait for it's release. i love the simplicity. just out of curiosity (i probably won't get an answer) was the background (blurred) an image or modeled?
I herd that release be right after the switch.
Beautiful job, @ndy! Congrats!
@ndy does seem to have a thing for gecko's :) Before you know it, he will be doing the Geico gecko animations (and in Blender too).
Great job!
@ndy, I love the splash screen, I'm quite new to Blender (having SWITCHED FROM Lightwave!) and I'm loving it, I too am looking forward to seeing that cute Gecko every day ;-) Well done mate.
Great splash screen, @ndy!
Great work Andy. I think it was the best choice.
It's truly an iconic image and character. So much so that maybe it's time to replace Suzanne the Monkey with Andy the Gecko.
I think the Blender Organisation should seriously consider adopting this gecko as an ambassador for Blender if Andy Goralczyk would agree to it. The character would be a great asset to help promote Blender.
Possibly go so far as replacing Blender's default monkey head mesh with a gecko head mesh if Andy Goralczyk would donate it.
Apparently gecko's come in a wide variety of colours. Some can be very bright colours so it would be OK if Blender's gecko was orange to match the Blender logo.
Some geckos can even change their colour to BLEND in with their surroundings! That would be cool for the first ever animated splash screen to have a color changing gecko.
The gecko wouldn't have to be called Andy. Maybe have a competition or vote to decide his name. Or maybe Ton should choose the gecko's name.
Does anyone else think it's a good idea?
Afterall, monkeys are soooo 2006.
The Gecko Guy look's better for the splash screen of blender 2.44 ^_^
This is really beautiful. I am glad it won. I don't think any version of Blender previously had a splash screen that looked so nice that I would be more compelled to run it. Congratulations, Andy
congrats andy, quite a bendy little fellow.
Yes, the new splash screen looks good. So does Blender 2.44! Yes, I haven't seen it anywhere else, but Blender2.44 is out in the wild now! I did get mine before posting this, so that the server wouldn't be jammed. Now that you know, go and get it!

Has anyone got that gecko as a desktop? I went to andy's site but can't find it there!
Awesome work, @ndy! Wonder who has the honor to be on the splash of 2.50
Just out of curiosity - does that gecko have the new SSS applied to help it look smaller?
-epat. :)
