2.43: The Countdown has Begun

147

screenie.pngIt's almost there! I'm guessing that more than 15 people have been working frantically for the last few days to get the 2.43 release AND the new www.blender.org website ready. We're in the final stages of collecting and placing the release packages, testing the new website and adding the final content - expected release time is later today. Stay tuned!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Hehe - we were already wondering how long it would take until everyone would figure out that link ;-) The website and releasenotes will follow in a few hours - we're getting *close* now!

  2. The above link didn't work =(

At least it will be there in the morning and then i will have to wait all day at school until i get home before i can use it

Oh well its worth it =D

  3. After I read in the blender developers mailinglist that the version currently in CVS is what 2.43 gonna be, I did a checkout and compile. It's 2.43 with it's new splash and all. :)

Ooops...just saw the translation for geheim :P. Now i really feel bad about this, like opening a Pandora's box or something :S...
Great design on the site :)

  5. Hahaha, loads of people are soo curious that they went beyond just waiting and tried all possibilities to actually find everything they are waiting for. Well I'm wondering if this is what it should be. :) Hehehe really hellarious.

"My Funky Platform is Better Than Yours!" liked that one, in Typo3 :P
By the way, the server was super fast last night, the download of 2.43 took a little more than one second, an average of 7 megabytes per second...i couldn't believe my eyes...

  7. I just downloaded the RC4 version mere hours ago and now there's final version. :P There's 1.1 megabytes of size difference in the packages so I guess they aren't the same version.

Great work and thanks to everyone who contributed. I'll go play with the new toy now. =D

  8. So I'm supposing the holy grail of all this is to one day jump into the 3d world?...

and after that, I'm guessing it's to take stuff out sort of like a dream...
just think... modeling your dreams from brain to blender... then... lol, I should stop now.

Thanks for making blender free (whoever's responsible :) ) -now if we could only do tons of good cartoons in the artist forum..

I'm actually more greatful that there are people out there who'd do all this for free and expect nothing back! -till recently, I couldn't see myself doing that. That is why I think a lot of people still like blender..

-it's not what it is, it's what it stands for:)

(actually I think it's for what it does.. hee hee:) )

  9. *does the happy release dance*

Downloading from the above links... (dial up sucks!!) I guess I'll have to wait for the release notes before I have any idea of what I'm doing with the new features :-p

  10. I noticed that the image preview function on http://geheim.blender.org/ doesn't work properly (just thought you might like to know). From the release notes, it looks like this will be another big release (some good things don't come to an end:-)! A big thank you to all the developers! I'd better get reading...

  11. Please let us know if you find any bugs on ‘geheim’!

None of the images in the gallery/features are working! They are obviously a javascript links and I let Firefox redirect new windows into new tabs, but this normally works just fine. The images in the old blender.org gallery are opened in a new tab as they should. I don't want to disable this feature in Firefox but I do want do watch the new images!!

Beside that, the new page looks awesome! And the new blender release is of course awesome, too! :)

  12. Congrats on the release! Can't wait to see the new site!
And, Just curious. Will blender3d.org be using the latest build of Typo3, 4.0.4? And once you get the site up, would it be possible to maybe see some of the template files you use? I've been struggling with figuring out Typo3. Its a very powerful system and I am slowly figuring things out. :)

  13. The background color of the python scripts descriptions is not good. It's a very light blue and the text is white. And the headings are an light blue, too. It's very hard to read.

  14. The columns of the community/artists page are suboptimal. I think it would look better if there where a space between the columns and how they are ordered are a bit confusing and cluttered.

  15. This is brilliant,
i'm sitting on the edge of my seat.!
Thanks in advance. I don't think it is an over-statement when I say that you guys are making the world a better place.

    -cheers

The dark-grey Bg is very good, but I think, the text shouldn't be white, but bright-grey, as white starts hurting...
    (Just about 0.75 0.75 0.75 grey... = 25%)

  17. The "Feature Videos" page times out for me.

Concerning the overall graphics, the only thing I would probably change currently is make the header graphics ("Feature Videos", "Blender" etc. at the top of the pages) PNGs instead of JPGs. The compression is very clearly visible on the title text and doesn't look nice.

Oh, the "Feature Videos" page loaded now, but it takes several minutes every time, there's probably something odd going on there.

  18. @Alexander Ewering
    I see.

    @Kram1032
Ok, but because geheim isn't reachable at the moment I post my last comment on it for now, even though it's a short one:

There seems to be a bug either in the flash-moviplayer, flash itself or firefox. I watched a few vids and firefox suddenly needed more than 1GB RAM (I only have 1GB physical RAM). Simply closing the tab didn't help, had to close firefox. Very strange thing, indeed.

  19. common babe cant wait just refreshing the page rapidly .....

    common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..common..
    refresh..refresh..refresh..refresh..refresh..refresh..refresh..refresh..refresh..refresh..refresh..refresh..refresh..refresh..

  20. @Advs89: it's not overwhelmed - it's down because we're working on it (it's still a development domain so don't expect production level availability until the release). We also have been donated another 200mbit of download capacity for download.blender.org today so I'm pretty convinced that things will be smooth today..

It's gonna be fun! ETA: about one hour from now.

  21. ETA = Estimated Time of Arrival

Yes, I think we'll be ready in about one hour from now (if we can find our sysadmin who's having dinner somewhere now ;-)

  22. ... a few minutes ago i "get contact to the new site".
I like the new design of that site very much. Thanks to anyone who was/is in involved...great job.

And the gallery for January - WOW, great pieces of work there.

Man, what a day! ( ... by the way - did we get here a new responses record? )

  23. i think release note image will be more amazing, there are a lot of good stuff who arent in release log and in gallery,im talking about renderdemaon work

  24. @Alexander Ewering
I have no problems with Firefox+Flash+Linux+YouTube. But I do have problems with Firefox+Flash+Linux+ComedyCentral.

  25. A little "bug":
I can't see the whole page, but I also can't scroll down, except using 3rd Mouse Button, changed cursor to bottom of screen...
I hope, you know, what I mean ;)
I can't scroll with just rolling the Mouse wheel.

  26. ????
    What's this?
Tons of Links and beyond them, the old page?
    O.o

  28. enjoyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    2.43 is officially out !!!!!!!! \o/ \o/ \o/ \o/ \o/ \o/ \o/ \o/ \o/ \o/ \o/ \o/

  29. yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaa blender 2.43 rulez!
and thumbs up the new website looks also very cool! i love the orange-blue-black contrast!!!

  30. Just so you all know, building 64-bit from source isn't going to work right away, I think. Downloaded it (timestamp shows a couple hours before the binaries went up) and it gives this message in console.

"64 bits compiles will give incorrectly saved .blend files. Do not use it. For testing purposes please remove this line from creator.c"

I don't know how to submit a report for this and I've got to be out the door for work. Do what you will with the information.
