I some what agree with the others. We have a BSOD on character animation and one on rigging. Topics like modeling, compositing, etc. would be much more beneficial to the community.

Iam with Mikkel, Toulouse2k and Genbond.

Genbond said a very important thing: we need to clear some concepts about rigging.

I believe that bones orientation is not being properly covered for realtime animation. And it is important if we want to integrate character animation to other open source engine projects like is being done with OGRE.

I agree. THe Character Animation tutorial for BSoD is the best I have ever seen. I wish it had been around a few years ago when I first started blending. I really don't see how anyone can improve on that. It goes from model creation to lip sync. What we really need is for the rigging article to be finished. I have yet to see a really good rigging tutorial that would form the basis to learning to create amazing rigs like mancandy or Ludwig.

I agree with Mikkel...IMHO, the definitive Character Animation for n00bs(me) has already been done. This tutorial, alone, gave me the basics to make me feel comfortable with Blender. That wheel has already been invented. That being said, I always welcome any new tutorials that might give me a new insight, but I feel I must speak up for a tutorial that opened the world of Blender to me.

Isn't this supposed to be covered by the Blender Summer of Documentation effort?
Have a look here:
http://mediawiki.blender.org/index.php/BSoD/Introduction_to_Character_Animation

If you for some reason consider that tutorial to be inadequate, maybe the prize could go to the person who brings it up to standard. Sometimes it seems to me that it is a weakness of the open source movements that many of the great efforts are not coordinated to reach a higher goal.

Don't misunderstand me, though. I think that offering an incentive for contributing is a great idea.

I have this nagging feeling that all this is for naught.. -what’s needed is something that’s not software specific.. a tutorial on how to describe shapes in 3d using poles to control them, and explaining what edgeloops actually are.. (and how they can be deleted without affecting the form at all..)

-if this isn’t done, newbies will soon look DOWN on us gurus…

basically: when one learns to draw comics, one only need a little book explaining perspective composition and such, and the reader builds on that…

I think the same needs to be done for 3d.. (there needs to be a distinction between where the basics end and where real skill begins) or else it’ll be abstracted as being “all the same” and stereotyped… 0.0… nobody wants that.. XD..

-uh.. 30 bucks is a good offer btw. good luck :)
