Magic Fluid Control

banner.png Ibkanat sent us link of an incredible demonstration of Blender fluids. It reminded me of the Psuedopod from Director James Cameron's move and special effects by ILM "The Abyss"

Please keep in mind that some of the code Nils used is not presently in Blender, but it does showcase what is possible for the future.

Nils wrote:

Actually, most of it [the code] is already in there. The two things that are currently only in my experimental" version are the fluid control, and the 2d connection. The first one is mostly working, but still requires a lot of fine-tuning (usability etc.). The second one is a bit more critical. But to be honest, I can't put down any dates - the problem is I'm at university, so what counts is to have the paper published… So I can't say when I'll have the time finish that - but it's definitely on my to-do list…

From his website:

The animation has been created in the context of the authors' work on controlled fluid simulation. The water is simulated using the Lattice-Boltzman method. It is controlled using particles which define local force fields and are generated automatically from either a physical simulation or a sequence of target shapes. At the same time, as much as possible of the natural fluid motion is preserved. The framework has been integrated into the open source software Blender, which was used to animate and render the shown sequences.

You'll find the demo animations on the website at Magic Fluid Control. If you are interested in learning how to use fluid simulation, here's the mediwiki.blender link

Maybe with enough cheering comments here we can convince Nils to keep working on the code ;-)

almost brings a particle controlled tear drop to my eye!

    that is just beautiful

Could it work with gaseous things as well? Would be great to make ghosts and all…

Keep up the great work Nils!

It is a long time ago you told me about the lattice-boltzman method and I used it successfully for a physics practical here. So thanks!

What impresses me most is your continued dedication to Blender fluids. You have really improved it over the years and this latest work is simply awesome!

Personally, I think it would be a shame not to share these incredible new features with the world.

No pressure! It will be done when it is done. ;-)

That's pretty frickin fantastic, I saw it a couple days ago.

    Now think… Terminator.

    Haw. Fantastic.

    Looks Great!…Amazing!
    very good Fluid Simulation Examples!

    keep working on it!
    Great Job NILS!!!!!!

curious if at one point we will not have a box container for the fluids.

    claas

Wow! That is absolutely awesome. Incredible work. Best of luck in your studies and I look forward to seeing this in blender when you have the time.

    very very cool.

animated targets? ;) no really im satisfied with this for now.

  16. 16 S-T-S Edit Link

there are animated targets too.. saw them on some other post here earlier where it was used to create a running horse of water

Nils's work has done so much to make Blender visible. He's very generous. His work is state of the art, and it is GPL! If he continues to develop for Blender, everybody will stop referring to Blender as that program with that weird interface, and start referring to it as the app you need in your pipeline for composition, UV unwrapping, Fluids, and perhaps some day animation and clothes sim as well. Blender is really to begin to excel in this points in comparison with 'big studio' apps.

    Thank you Nils.

    Woah….That's all I can say.
This looks amazing! Any way you could compile a test release, just for those that can't wait the length of time it might take before it gets into an actual blender release? ;)
Thanks for your work on this. It's just awesome!
