Six Video Tutorials: an Introduction to Blender
There’s a new video site on the block and it’s called ShowMeDo. It’s not another Youtube or Google video; instead they focus on videos that teach the viewer. At this moment they have seven categories, Blender being one of them. Currently, they host an exceptional series of video tutorials by Glen Moyes, who made these for his Blender workshop.
From the basic terms employed in the field of 3D modelling to the creation of complex scenes, Glen Moyes guides you gently through Blender’s wonderful world.
And it’s true! The videos are calm and clear and I think you’ll find them easy to follow. Glen covers the following topics:
- Terms and Concepts used in 3D Graphics
- The Blender Interface
- The Blender Viewport
- Manipulating Objects in Blender
- Blender’s Datablocks
- Blender’s Edit Mode
I couldn’t tell exactly, but I guess that there’s over one hour of material here and if you have just started learning Blender, I recommend you sit through them all. Heck – I think these video’s should be mandatory for all novice Blender users! :-)

They are realy great. And I think tehre are also some usefull things for old blenderheads in it. Don’t miss them

great stuff about datablocks I never bothered to learn. good find. keep it up – maybe they should host greybeard’s vid tuts too? those taught me a crapload

Wow. I didn’t even make an announcement on the forums yet and it’s on BlenderNation already. :)
@aws357. I used Camtasia for these. Camstudio is what I used to use and probably would still use if the TSCC codec didn’t rock so much.
By the way, I will be making more of these in the future (first week of January). I haven’t made video tutorials for a while since I’ve spent almost two years teaching hands-on workshops. However, we’ve expanded the scope of the workshop and now most of the training is done on line so it’s more accessible for students.
The original videos were 1024×576, and the ShowMeDo guys put extra time in to make sure that these videos would be just as effective, even going as far as changing the site layout when you played those videos just so they would fit since they are quite large for Flash videos. So give them a pat on the back for the work they did.
I imagine people are interested in the original 1024×576, 15fps, h.264 encoded files. I’m working on that; hopefully something involving Osprey.
Hi Bart. Thanks for the very nice write-up :-) Kyran and I have been building the site part-time for a year now, as of January we plan to spend much more time on the site (on the back of a bank-loan) so that we can grow things.
The range of tutorials we’re covering is already pretty impressive (far wider than we’d expected just 6 months ago), we’re always happy to welcome new authors.
To that end, we have instructions (referring to comments above) on how to make your own videos in the wiki:

I do ask that interested authors drop me a mail first of all, just so we can talk through the tutorial. If the tutorial is strong and educational then we will probably be interested in it.
