Simulating Area Lights With Ramp Shaders

5

falloff.jpgVenomGFX has written a short but sweet tutorial on how to use Blender's ramp shaders to simulate area lighting. This method creates rather convincing lighting while not suffering from the same render times as area lights.

Maybe the word 'tutorial' is a bit too much for this one, but Venom does point out a very useful technique that I think you will enjoy. Just take a few minutes and see how it works for you!

At the end, he also presents an alternative with nodes. It's just a screenshot, but I suppose it's clear enough as it is.

The tutorial is available in three languages: English, Spanish and Hungarian!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. With an old slow computer as my only option till next summer, this kind of timesaver tutorial is well worth having, thanks!
