Here's a site that has a very good collection of high resolution and FREE textures. All of the textures where taken by the sites author so there’s no question of ownership. Animals, furs, wood metals and many more. The animal pictures are good enough to use for reference material as well.
While visiting BlenderArtists you might have come across this wonderful image by radiance in the Final Projects section. From the post:

the_nr posted about a neat effect he came up with to simulate an x-ray scan. It involves a blend texture mapped to an animated empty and great use of the compositing nodes. You can see the main post the describes how it was done here, and the video of the effect (XviD) here (remember to right click and save as). Nice one the_nr!

Steve Alvis wrote us about using Blender to import data from Graph Calc, a free graphing calculator for Windows and Linux which can be used to graph 3d functions.
Steve writes:
You are not only limited to Cartesian coordinates, but you can use polar coordinates too. The 3d graphs can export to DXF which are compatible with blender. You just have to remove doubles in the edit mode to make it look right.
Nice tip – thanks Steve!

If not check out our articles here and here, and download the latest build. Using this tool, Scott Wilkinson (Ex-Nihilo) has posted an amazing model on cgtalk and he has even made the .blend file available.
Clayton Sandham (CGuy) has made a tutorial for us to show how he produced his 2.42 splash screen contest entry. Not only is the image geometrically stunning, but it uses the array modifier and YafRay to make it happen.
You can find the tutorial here.
